More action needed to protect salmon, says Yukon First Nation

The Tr'ondek Hwech'in Han Nation in Dawson City, Yukon, says a group effort is needed in the Yukon and Alaska to conserve chinook salmon in the Yukon River.

The First Nation, along with most Yukon First Nations, has agreed to cut its aboriginal fishing quotas in half because of low salmon stocks in the river this year.

The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which recommended the quota cuts, has also cancelled the commercial and sport fisheries altogether on the river this summer.

"You know, we should never be in this situation," Tr'ondek Hwech'in Chief Darren Taylor told CBC News.
