Alaska: Fish and Game deputy commissioner Ken Taylor to work to promote Pebble

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A partnership pushing development of a huge copper and gold mine near some of the world's best wild salmon and trout streams has hired away a top state official.
The Pebble Partnership announced Monday that Ken Taylor, a deputy commissioner at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, is going to work for them. Taylor will be the partnership's vice president for the environment. He begins his new job Aug. 1.

The Pebble Mine is a world-class copper and gold deposit located near the headwaters of Bristol Bay about 200 miles southwest of Anchorage. It is situated near the most productive wild sockeye salmon fishery in the world. The Continued@URL...

Well, you could look at it a couple of ways. I have a tendency to look at it the way every is so far. But...

Lets just say for the sake of argument that he is hired on as a guy that can keep them from doing things that are going to destroy that fishery. Maybe he actually has the environment in his mind taking this job and not just the almighty dollar...

HAHAHAHA!!!!! Yeah right!!!!
Let us prey though.

Of course we'd like to think so. However, a man with Mr. Taylor's credentials must be aware that no open pit heap leach gold mine has ever NOT polluted and contaminated the surrounding environment and aquatic ecosystems. Few industries have such a perfect record of environmental contamination.

Troy Letherman, editor of Fish Alaska Magazine has a very detailed article about Pebble in the July issue.

Mines and water do not make for an environmentally safe mixture in my opinion. At least not one for fish.

Preying on the financially less fotunate has been a motto of the mining industry as long as it has been known that the chemicals used for extraction are deadly. And not just to humans. It is evident by the numerous attempts at "poviding" local indigenous peoples with a means for modernization and wealth not dependent on natural resources, i.e. fish. Forking out rediculous amounts of cash to shmooze the locals and giving them employment for twice what they would normally make to be "guides" and protect execs from bears. Seems pretty obvious what they are doing. Anyone with pink stuff between their ears should be able to figure that one out. After the precious metals are gone, so is everyhing else in its wake. Atleast people are starting to see the error of our ways and realizing the much greater potential of the land by leaving it the way god made it.
