Many folks wonder why our resources such as fish, game, trees, grazing land, water, and so on are managed the way they are. Richard Kroger, who worked for state and federal reource agencies for about 30 years has written "Choosing a Conservation Vocation or a Bureaucratic Career; Personal choices and the environmental consequences". In it, he paints a clear, but maybe too simplistic, picture of why we are where we are.

If you are interested in seeing improvemnets in how our environment is managed, preserved, and restored then please read this book to gain a better understanding of the obstacles.

I spent a good deal of my college chasing a Biology degree with the idea in mind of getting a 'Conservation Career." Then I found out that my choices after school would be with a Government agency making crap pay to bolster the position of the standing political administration, or for a lot more, being a corporate stooge putting my rubber stamp on phony environmental impact statements so they could continue to trash our natural resources... either THAT or becoming some schmuck school teacher somewhere stuck inside all year long.

Environmental law would be interesting.

If you like a little excitement and you can handle the stress, natural resource law enforcement can be fun. You definitely have a direct impact on the resource. Did my time as a Park Ranger before switching to a different agency. The only thing I will say about being a ranger is that you can't live on sunsets.
Used to work closely with WDFW enforcement. Overall they are a great bunch of people doing a pretty tough job. There are always people in that job that can't seem to understand the difference between an honest mistake and intentional poaching.

That type of heavy handed crap just alienates people.

Anyway, sounds like a book that might be a good read.
