Fly and I are kicking around the idea of starting a late season fishing tournament/campout party. We're leaning towards late March/early April time frame so there would be categories for both steelhead and springers. Preliminary plans include a day of fishing on any Forks area river followed by a monster bon-fire on some gravel bar for evening fesivities. Buy in would cover entry fees and tee-shirts made for the event as well as camping if a charge is required on a place such as Allen Bar on the Hoh. Any profits would be split between big fish winners, perhaps with a portion going to a steelhead conservation group such as the Wild Steelhead Coalition.

My question is how many people would be interested in attending such an event? If the interest is there, and I think it is, we'll firm up on the specifics and post something solid once the artwork/logo for the event is complete. smile

would prizes/places be offered per river, or for the whole day? If for the whole day, would there be "best of" type prizes/places (honorable mentions?) for individual rivers?
any other rule ideas you guys kicking around?

Those questions fall into the catagory of things yet to be ironed-out. Usually simplicity is best, so I'm thinking first second and third place winners for each, steelhead and salmon. Where they are caught would not matter as long as they were caught on a Forks area river.

mreyns: That's the only way I can think of.

I just checked my calendar for March...

I'd be in for sure, but I'm going to Long Beach, CA. and Alaska that month for shows. With only 1 weekend free. The second week in April is looking good though.

I used to fish a C&R tournament where they gave you a measuring board and a disposable camera to photo the fish you caught. The "board" was basically a vertical blind slat with a yardstick sticker on it. Longest fish regardless of girth. These were hardier fish (redfish) so handling out of water was not a big issue.

I have also seen C&R tournament where they make fish cradles that have measuring sticks on them. Fish are measured and photo'd without removing them from the water with longest fish winning.

You might want to make it a pairs event so that you have at least one first-person verification other than the angler's.

Just a couple ideas for ya. My method of stuffing them into milk jugs is just not conservation minded... smile

"Damn, I thought this was going to be a 'Fly' deal, ya know with bugrods and such.

I'd be up for it, as long as I can use my bugrod, and drink ..........."

I would be as well.

I think a couple tater heads would drag a boat over to Represent the 208. You know as well as I do if money is involved you may as well just hand it over to Stams daughter. laugh

All nates on the steelhead, Jerry. C&R rules with photographic proof of length and girth will determine the winners. smile
