I need to find someone with a good beer connection to help me out.
I want to get on someone's "short list" for the upcoming November release of the Deschutes Abyss.
It's damn near impossible to find any here in Seattle - even on the damn day that it's supposedly released.
IE, if you're at BottleWorks the second it opens on the day Abyss is out, the store is already "sold out".
Not like I want a couple of cases of the stuff (although that would kick ass), I'd just like to get a single case of the stuff.
Anyone help me out? Personal favor?
To those that know Abyss, you know what I'm talking about.
Feel free to PM or email me to keep it on the low-down, etc.

Here is what the Brewery had to say about it:
Pours dark coffee color to black with loads of dense tan head. Sticky lacing on the glass when the head finally recedes.
Aroma is almost smoky, with hints of chocolate, a nuttiness similar to hazelnut, butterscotch or toffee.
Taste of bitter chocolate followed with a roasty flavor, nuts, vanilla, some residual sweetness and a little oak in the finish.
Mouthfeel is creamy and rich, with decent levels of carbonation to break up such a big brew. Finish is both sweet and bitter.
Great beer. This was our last bottle of about 8 or so we tried over the last 10 months or so. We've also had the pleasure of having this on tap. Terrific stuff.
***********
Damn...I'm not a beer drinker (or drinker, period) but that stuff sounds tasty!

the dissident DESCHUTES BREWERY'S - 2008 Reserve - A Flanders Style Oud Bruin After much anticipation, we are proud to introduce our wildest brew yet – The Dissident. Arguing for more time in the cellar, this Reserve Series beer is anything but conventional. Fermented for more than 18 months in isolation from the rest of the beers, The Dissident is a distinctive Oud Bruin, Flanders-style sour brown ale, with a fruity aroma and flavor.
The Dissident pairs well with a wide variety of dishes - the high acidity is perfect for cutting creamy dishes or cooling spicy ones. Because of the fruity characteristics derived from the cherries, the beer also pairs well with chocolate. We recommend pairing The Dissident with your favorite chocolate, the darker the better, soft cheeses like Brie and creamy dishes like spaghetti carbonara, or macaroni and cheese.

Note the IBU's dude....too much for me
THE ABYSS DESCHUTES BREWERY'S - 2006 & 2007 Reserve - A DEEP & MYSTERIOUS FLAVOR EXPERIENCE
In 2005, Deschutes Brewery officially launched its Reserve Series with Mirror Mirror, a delicious oak-aged barley wine loosely based on a double batch of Mirror Pond Pale Ale. This year our brewers decided to experiment with an Imperial Stout, appropriately named The Abyss after its dark, deep and mysterious flavor experience.
The Abyss has immeasurable depth inviting you to explore and discover its rich, complex profile. Hints of molasses, licorice and other alluring flavors draw you in further and further with each sip. And at 11% alcohol by volume, you will want to slowly savor each and every ounce.
November 2008 marks the third release of this rare and eclectic ale. Limited availability in wax-dipped 22-ounce bottles and on draft at a few select establishments.
“The Abyss was one of those beers I didn’t want to end. I was totally blown away - this is precious stuff.” Christian DeBenedetti, beer writer and Men’s Journal contributor

And the greatest of them all....good thread dude.
Mirror Pond is just a short walk from the Deschutes Brewery & Public House in downtown Bend and reflects the Three Sisters Mountains. This scenic spot alongside the Deschutes River is the locals’ choice for summer festivals and concerts.
The quintessential American pale ale, Mirror Pond elegantly blends the sweetness of malted barley with the bite of hops (which add bitterness and aroma). It's refreshing, loaded with strong hop flavors, and perfectly balanced. Men's Journal July 2004

Sounds to me Parker needs to take a lil drive to Bend, Or. Ouch. I'd rather not have to....especially with NO guarantee that they would have any. The stuff sells out in seconds....if you're lucky to find it. I *AM* willing to drive to Yakima or Ellenburger, though. Gotta be *some* way for me to score a case of Abyss. Come on, someone needs this Imperial Stout drinker out!

No thanks.
Not going to get raped over beer.
I'll pay retail prices, but that's it.
Besides, I want a case of the upcoming Nov 2008 released beer.

If you want the best beers, you MUST go to the source. You cant expect them to fall on your lap.
Make the pilgrimage to Bend. You'll be happy you did.
Another microbrew Mecca on the map is San Diego County. Home to the likes of Stone Brewing. The Seattle Area is falling away from the microbrew hall of fame.

There is a brewery in Everett, I think it's called Fat Boy and one of their brews is 9.3%. Maybe I'll have time to stop by there on Saturday--- it's maybe 10 minutes from my house. www.lazyboybrewing.com

How does Abyss compare to Obsidian stout? I've gotten out of touch with all the microbrews out there.

Update: I purchased a case of the 2007 Abyss and hopefully will get a case of the 2008. Unfortunately, it's all down close the source. Ie, it's sitting in Bend, Or. Any PP members heading down that way and want to make a beer delivery run for me, holler my way! All I gotta do is get it up to Stlhdr1's house in Vancouver, and I'm golden! Mikespike - Abyss is an Imperial Stout. It's a meal, not a beer. IIf you even remotely enjoy Obsidian, you will flat out lose it over Abyss. Nothing compares. If I were going to be executed tonight, my last meal request would be a bottle of Abyss. Irie - I hear ya. I need to go to the Deschutes Brewery and pay my proper respects and homage.

Grab a Bud a shove a hamburger in it... ...and still all you'll taste is hamburger.
