Relief checks sent to salmon fishermen

Wednesday, October 01, 2008 | 11:06 PM Emergency relief checks were mailed Wednesday to hundreds of salmon fishermen on the West Coast.

The federal government is handing out $100 million to help fishermen affected by the closure of this year's salmon fishing season.
About 500 people have asked for relief so far.
The fishermen will be paid for half of their losses this year, up to $225,000.
Fishermen who have not applied for emergency aid have until December to due so.

Yeah good luck there rvr. I can't even get an unemployment check out of the state to feed the family. We aren't part of the "in" crowd so don't hold your breathe for gov. money.

This is just DUMB DUMB DUMB. As I've said previously, I'd be 100% IN FAVOR of paying these if they were buyouts on their commercial fishing rights--to remove their impacts from the ecosystem, or to trade them to the sporties.

But paying people, who essentially depleted a natural resource, to wait around and see if that resource returns so they can deplete it again, is mind-numbingly stupid.

Are you fooking kidding me? Up to $225,000. I'm in the wrong business. Clearly I should have gone into the unemployed fisherman business.

Wow, for a second I thought I was on the darkside reading about the wall street bailout. Don't worry about the salmon population, down here they are wiping out the groundfish population instead. doh

This is money well spent.
It will go to the anti-sportfishing lobby, and also to make sure that the states prediction numbers remained "cooked" so that the commercials will always get there share regardless of run size.

Hey, I'm a salmon fisherman, and I'm not doing so hot. I could sure use a piece of that bailout. And if they send me some, I'll use it to assist the ailing housing industry. Let's see, garage roof trusses week before last, $3800; drain pipe around foundation, $417; more garage framing lumber Friday, $3,000+; yesterday insulation for under the basement slab, $1,000; some plumbing supplies this morning, $140. The credit crunch is hitting the contractors hard. The concrete company has a hard time getting operating cash. My concrete contractor has a hard time getting concrete to pour my job, even though my bank is doing one-day turn arounds getting payments disbursed. Yeah, I'll put that salmon fishing bailout to good use.

I have this vision of some fat cats lounging in the Caymans with a cigar and some rum saying, "ain't America grand!"

Wow, it looks to me like this is a half hearted handout.

The Commercial trawl fisheries have had banner years (catching salmon as bycatch.)
Yet, more selective fishers get shafted.

The only thing that would top that would be if tribes are standing in that handout line.

What and F'n stupid azz joke. Can a dude who makes candy bars get a relief check when their candy no longer sells cuz too many people realize they are too fat and quit eating them? Can my father-in-law get a relief check cuz he ordered 15 million dollars in inventory of furniture for next year and then the economy tanks? Stupid. This proves, once again, the ingnorant stupidity of the dumb ass idiots running too many things. Which also proves there is enough of us that are dumb asses who keep putting stupidity in office.

Rico, mostly I'm fishing vicariously through you and Stam. Been cutthroat fishing a couple times, but haven't been salmon fishing since last spring. Which is why I should qualify for a salmon relief check.

The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public
debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be
tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be
curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work,
instead of living on public assistance. -->>
