Well, I guess it's the year of all years for me... Our deer season turned out well with the good early rainfall...

I'm just bummed that I actually shot this deers left side horn off, right at the base. All I had was a head on neck shot at 112 yards while he was bedded down and my muzzloader had a slight delayed fire...

The buck that my buddy is holding is one he shot opening day but we couldn't find, the ravens showed up where he was at 3 days later... Such a bummer. We're sick about it....

Nice pose with the gun, there, homeslice. We'll be reading about you in the post-season obituaries at that rate. grin

Nice bucks, bro. I never could appreciate the muzzleloader thing. Waiting for that cloud of smoke to clear to see if you missed or not and all. rofl

Yeah no worries about the gun, it was just expelled into the bucks neck prior to the pic and was empty.. But it does look a little funny though!

Good job, killer. You're having a hell of a fall hunt this year!

You're lucky I don't like the taste of game and hunt. Not too sure what title would get mustered up for me by the clowns.

Nice job Keith. This will be a season to remember. Bummer about your buddies buck. Cool that he found the carcass though and was able to recover the rack. Sucks that he can't eat it!

"Bow whore" rofl Sorry Parker, couldn't resist. I guess that confirms that I am a clown.

Keith-

Sorry about the horns - at least you didn't go to your back yard to find that a squirrel had gnawed on them!

Yeah, I'm still contemplating what to do with them. Whether to do a full shoulder mount or a just a plaque with the horns, but I need to find someone who can fix the horn.... He's caped out in the freezer at this point....

Wow nice job! Such a cool story too.

As an aside, I shot a caribou through the horn one time, he stood there shaking his head like he had a bee in his ear. I wasn't shooting a ML, it was a 30-06 and it made a hole, I had to shoot it a couple more times to kill it.

It makes for an interesting story when I show someone the rack.

You should have mount made with a bullet going through, and the horn exploding off. If somehow you could wire the whole thing together, that would get people's attention

That reminds me of a buck I shot a couple years ago. Opening day Dad and I jump a 3 pt and I miss....

Dad gets a shot just before it goes up and over the ridge (safe shot still) and deer drops like a sack of rocks. We're high fivin' and take our time up the hill to recover our kill. No deer, no blood.

1 week later I'm in the same unit and kill a nice 3 pt with a broken tine. Dad had hit that deer in the horn and knocked it on it's butt. Woulda made my best rack yet but with the broken tine it's a garage rack.

Technically speaking, they are only horns if they are not shed, like Pronghorn Antelope, or, Mountain Goats. If they are dropped once a year they are antlers. wink

I can fix it for you if you can't find someone closer, Keith.

You missed the boat then. Wild game is awesome to prepare and eat.

I always tell my wife and kids "To be the best, you have to eat the best." Eating a duck is like eating the Olympic marathoner of the animal world. Good deer meat is some of the best protein you can eat. If it tasted bad to you then you probably prepared it incorrectly, i.e. over cooked it.

Animal blood is sweet, when the blood is gone the good flavor is gone with it. I grilled some geese a couple of weeks ago. I marinated it in Olive Oil (thats all) and grilled it. I cut it thin and served it and no one could tell that it wasn't flank steak, until I told them.

I can't wait for late muzzle loader.

LOL

It is funny, I was saying to my wife last night (regarding having to let go of all the silvers in the Halis): "You know all this CnR is driving me nuts, I need to kill and eat something soon!"

Hell, I took the family mushroom hunting on Sunday afternoon, just to get a little harvest on.

I must be behind Parker a bit on the evolutionary chain.

Wikipedia says -

A hunter-gatherer society is one whose primary subsistence method involves the direct procurement of edible plants and animals from the wild, foraging and hunting without significant recourse to the domestication of either. Hunter-gatherers obtain most from gathering rather than hunting; up to 80% of the food is obtained by gathering

That is a nice buck. Look at the neck on that thing. I shot a similar buck a few years ago that was a 3x1 but had the same body.
That's a lot of steaks.

Mine was a neck shot as well but we had to pack it out on the horses.
Very cool you got a big bodied one. Those wheat fed bucks eat up good too.

They were in rut HARD, Coyotes have a realllly thick coat already to, the land owner says it looks to be a early winter and a bad one from what he has seen in years past!

From my obeservations the Coyotes do have a great coat and the Muley's are swollen and rubbin'. We got a 5X5 a week and half ago that had his antlers full of bark.....the saplings show that he ain't alone. This year reminds me of the Deer season in '96/'97 when we had another big snow and heavy winter kill.

Nice buck btw.

I'll second the fact that it very well could be a wild winter.....

My buck had more fat on it than any of the deer I've killed in the past and I've hunted that same area for 9 years now...

I'm hoping we get dumped on, makes for some killer duck hunting and winter steelhead fishing!

I'm headed back up in the woods Sunday eve to try and help a friend fill his Rifle Cow Tag for the Lewis River unit. We'll be at it hard for Monday and Tuesday. I'm hoping to see a bear because I'll pop his ass and go for the grand slam with a cougar.....
