Looks like the lastest grads are going to have a tough time finding work. Watching news this morning and the outlook is not good, with the only exception being working for Gov't, which is predicted to increase it's employment by almost 20%. I honestly can't think of one good thing to say about that.

Depending on which level of Goverment you work in, it is a pretty secure place to be. Salaries are not the largest, but the benefits are solid, especially when compared to the private sector. No matter what happens to the economy there has to be some level of government services. Pick a job in a field that is essential, like public safety.
I know what you are hinting at Slab, but at least at the local level I don't see any growing in Goverment right now. However, there is a whole bunch of us baby boomer types that have our time in and will be heading out the door in the next few years. The plus side is that will provide opportunity for many young people who are willing to do public service.

Here's a pic of the TV screen this morn. salmostar...I think you are over reacting to my post My point was supposed to be that if the only positive hiring numbers are in the field of Gov't.....there is something terribly wrong..... If you are tired of the "Gov't bashing" perhaps my statement is true?

All I know is that my industry, video games development, we simply cannot find enough talented artists (3D modeling, texturing, animating) and programmers. The standards are pretty high overall, but industry wide lack of excellent candidates is a MAJOR issue for most studios.

I'll bet the government jobs break down to expanding the military, law enforcement for the new prisons, teachers for the new schools, lawyers and poly sci majors for the transition teams after the election, etc.
Probably not nearly as nefarious as it sounds.

I visited the site on the screen shot....and while I initially wanted to find out more about the gov't jobs, I ended up surfing around a bit and found some interesting stuff....like ....2008 grads have a lot of similarities to 1982 grads......I copied some of the site ....
Highlights from the report show:
• Eighty-seven (87) percent of 2008 graduates expect to work more than 40 hours a week—as did 87 percent of Class of 1982 graduates.
• Forty (40) percent of 2008 graduates say they were willing to spend six or more nights away from home a month for their job; in 1982, 34 percent were willing to make the same trade-off.
• When asked about the importance of the job in relation to other aspects of life (family, health, community, free time, and so forth), 2008 respondents rated the job as more important or less important in the same pattern as did 1982 respondents.
• Graduates from both generations rated family, health, happiness, and ethics as more important than the job, while both groups said community, free time, and vacation were not more important than the job.
“Where we see differences between the generations are in the attributes they seek in employers,” says Mackes. “Today’s graduates are focused on security and stability: They are looking for an employer that offers opportunity for advancement, job security, and a good benefits package. Those who graduated in the early ‘80s were more focused on self-actualization. They looked for organizations to provide them with the opportunity to use their skills, the opportunity for personal development, and recognition.”

I realize the study is comparing two generations, but I wonder what they find when comparing to a half-generation, i.e, something from the mid 90s during the tech boom.

Too many video games already... Part of the problem. Yeah, and too much of that damn rock and roll music. And that whole internet thing is going to be the end of civilization too. And the world isn't round either, it's shaped like a burrito.... (bonus points for anyone recognizing that last line)

I guess it's just as good for a kid to sit in front of a video game all afternoon as it is for him to be outdoors hunting or fishing...or not.
