Sen. Ted Stevens found guilty in corruption case

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was convicted of seven corruption charges Monday in a trial that threatened to end the 40-year career of Alaska's political patriarch in disgrace.

Have you seen the dirty diaper ad, Irie? Shows a baby being passed around from person to person, then crawling across the floor to some new unsuspecting person who picks up the baby and soon recognizes the stench and passes along the stink to the next person and so on and so on. It refers to the 39 years our Gov touts....but could refer to countless others in politics as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, the closing line is..."When something's been around this long, it's time for a change."

Sorry I don't watch much TV except the weather, and even that I've found to be dubious & unreliable. When NPR starts a channel I might check it out. PBS has too much children's programming and Comcast doesn't carry ITN World News.

It's always sad to see a distinguished senior Senator, with so many years of faithful service faultier, it's really a shame, he was such a good Ecoterrorist.

I think that the Republican Party ought to strongly consider not having him run for anything...if he wins, he'll be in the Senate for as long as his appeals hold out...call it a year.

If his appeals don't go through...which is what I'd wager is going to happen...then the Senate will kick him out, and it will be embarrassing as hell for him and the Party.

If he follows his Republican Party's leadership example, however, he'll just live in an alter-reality, and keep on denying everything until the whole house of cards tumbles down...which is what I'd expect him to do, easily.

What do the Republicans here think he ought to do? He's likely to win a Senate seat, but he's likely to have it yanked out from under him in a year to 18 months after he does...is that OK with you?

She's not going anywhere near the White House...anyone who thinks that is a good idea has got to be fuckin crazy.

It's not just experience that she's lacking...it's integrity, honesty, a grasp of complex issues, and frankly an education about most everything involving government...some of that she could gain over the next six years, but most of it will never be there, and I still think that the Repubs are going to throw her under the bus come Nov. 5th, anyway.

The entire point of the surge was to create space for a political solution...said political solution is nowhere in sight, so the point of the surge failed.

If we just wanted to end the violence without a political solution, we should just turn the whole region into glass...now that would be a successful end to violence without any regard for a political solution, and would at least be honest...so far we're claiming that we're after a political solution, while touting an escalation that did nothing for a political solution.

Either way, that's a total aside to the conversation we're having, which is what the Republican Party will be doing now in Alaska with their likely Senator to be clapped in irons as soon as his appeals are over...does anyone think that this is a good idea?

Hankster, in regards to her drawing the crowds of Middle America, I am reminded of the old Barnum quote, "Nobody ever went broke overestimating the bad taste of the American public." Of course, that applies to the eventual winner of the election, whomever that may be.

Since it seems that the people of Alaska don't want the democratic option, I would suggest that Stevens stay in the race until after he is elected then immediately step down. It's tough to swallow the cost of an additional election, but 6 years of a candidate you disagree with may be harder. For Alaska, with all the federal land and expenses, the choice of a senator may have more ramifications then it does for us. In fact, I think he should promise to resign if elected, but encourage people to still vote the party. I know you don't agree with him or the republicans Todd, but the people of Alaska do. If they don't vote for him, they are forced to elect the opposition. Maybe its self deserving since this was looming, but the way the political system works, it would have been near impossible to get him off the ticket. If he tries to stay in office, I would hope the republicans would lead the vote to toss him out on the first day of the session.

It seems to me that the best thing to do would be to drop out now, and get another Republican in there asap...Alaska will elect him/her, and the problem is solved.

What am I missing AuntyM. The senate is a 6 year term. A pardon may be coming, but the democratic run congress will toss him anyway, which they should do regardless. Todd, with the election on Tuesday, many ballots have been cast and its unlikely a new candidate could even be put on the ballot. Even more unlikely that a new ballot could be printed. SInce he insists on running my guess is he will lose or be tossed out. Win and get tossed out and more people will be pissed off at the republicans. Lose or withdraw and the democrats get what they want. The party has one choice if they want to keep that seat in the future.

Yeah, I think you're right about the timing of it...it's too late to get someone else in there, and the only hope the Repubs have of keeping the seat is getting him elected, and then he either wins his appeal (very unlikely), or gets tossed on his ear by his fellow Senators (very likely) and Alaska holds a special election and probably just installs another one just like him...mebbe Palin will run for the Senate seat?

Sheesh...as if Alaska isn't a laughing stock this fall already...

This guy could have been hit on so many things. He has been double dealing for years. He is a piece of shiat and wont even step down now. One more reason for term limits. The pardon issue may be moot as I don't believe that Stevens will be sentenced until after the new Prez is in office. It is not common to pardon someone until after they have been sentenced, but with the moral compass of the current Admin, I expect anything.

....and Wild Bill had a moral compass? Clinton pardoned 16 terrorists (FALN) or more correctly commuted their sentences, pardonned Dan Rostenkowski and Mel Reynolds, both of whom were (D) Congressmen convicted of crimes involved fraud and worse, among others.

Give me an F'n break before you go spouting off on the misuse of pardons. Remember also that Hitlery's brother accepted over $500,000 from some of the folks who were granted pardons, and then gave some of it back once it became public knowledge.

The whole lot of them are crooks, so before you get holier than thou, try swinging a dead cat in a small room packed with politicians. It won't be hard to hit someone dirty.
