Looking into this election and the endless "he said, she said" up to and including profane comments about basically good people brought this out from the archives of an article I keep..
John Stuart Mill observed in the mid 1800s, "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
I have met more than a few of these people on both sides. The ones who would not fight and the ones who were first in line to do their duty as they saw it. I remember the latter with great admiration and feel a bit of pity for the former. One of the people I most admired was a man I met on two occasions while serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam years. We played inservice football together and later coached the high school team to an unbeaten season on Okinawa. His story is told here and I can only wish there were people like him to run this government.
