Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for in a float rod, concerning length, action, spinning or casting and lure weight range? I haven't done this type of fishing and would like to get some equipment for my son and I.

Lamiglas X 106 MHC Dave Vedder is designed for float fishing, or the Lamiglas X 10 MTC Bill Herzog. I actually prefer Dave's rod for Spoons, and Bills rod for floats.

It depends on which rivers you plan on fishing and what kind of money youd be willing to spend. Or wether you plan on using this rod for more than float fishing. the lamiglas jc is a great all around rod. hell you can even boondogg with it.

Regardless of wich brand you choose, length should be your big concern. Big line mends are needed, and the long rod is the way to do this not to mention they will cast light weights. The action and power pertains to your river, fish, and preference.

I have personally observed Vedder fishing floats with a Herzog rod, and Herzog fishing spoons with a Vedder rod...sometimes at the same time.

How's that for irony?

Fish on...

Todd

P.S. My favorite float rod is a Lami CP X96JC...with a pink worm.

P.P.S. Only I don't use a float while fishing it smile

For under a $100 you can get a 10.5' Shimano or Shakespear, then hang a Shimano 2500 spinning reel, depends how much you want to spend, some braided line, leader, bobber/float, some good jigs.......go fishing!!!!!

or

You can spend $300 - 600 for a Loomis or Lamiglas rod, 13'...couple that with a Stratic 2500 reel, EBAY price $110 - 189, same braided line, leader, bobber/float, some good jigs in 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 oz.......go fishing!!!!!

I've fished with 9.5', 10.5' and 13'........all are fun but I really like my 3 piece, 13' Lamiglas.......NOT A BOAT ROD!!!!!

Having no idea what you intend to fish for or what kinds of waters you frequent, only the most generic of set ups can be offered. Rod - 10' range with a line rating of 8-17 or 10-20 in a "medium" action fitted with either a spinning reel, level wind or center pin - its all personal preference on the reel.

With out further info from your side, all replies are meaningless.

Lots of good rods out there now. I'd make it at least 9.5 feet, if for float fishing only. I use spinning rods for steelhead and coho, casting for chinook b/c of the stronger drag.
