Goose decoys

I need new ones.
Last week someone left 5 fullbody decoys in a field I have hunted for over 20 years. After 24 hours with nobody there, I said screw it and hunted next to them with my old magnum shells away on the side. All the geese flocked to those 5 dekes. Not sure what kind of decoys they were, but while knocking the frost off of them I noticed they had some sort of felt-type material covering them instead of the usual paint on plastic. Any idea on what brand these may have been?

My guess is that they are either Avery Green Head Gear (GHG), Drop Zone Elites, or the newer Big Feet.
Good luck

That felt would be flocking. There are a number of decoys it could have been... Dropzones, ghg, hardcore, dsd, bigfoots, dakotas, carrylites... you can flock any decoy out there.
where were you hunting? eastside?

Avery Green Head Gear (GHG) Now I know what GHG stands for on hunting sites. Thanks.
Joes carries Avery for $220 for six. They also have the Final Approach on sale for $129.
I thought flocking was just for the black neck. This was the entire body. I think the neck was a little thicker - maybe they flocked that.
I was hunting Grant county by myself, and knocked the snot out of them 2 mornings in a row. The third morning they wouldn't even dare look my way.
Steel shot suks.

if they were all flocked then I believe they would have been GHG FFDs, (fully flocked decoys) The final approach HD gunners are pretty nice and thats a good price.

Thanks for the info. After seeing geese feeding right next to FFD's on 2 different occasions with no hunters really makes me want them.
I'll have to call around to Outdoor emporium, sportsmens, and Joes and see what's the best price.

I hope you have deep pockets. FFD's are expensive. The other decoys that are close to FFD's are Hardcore decoys. That is what I use. They are a bit less, but still expensive. Keep your eye on Craigslist, and the paper. I just bought 3 more dozen hardcore for $450, which is less that half what they retail for.
Good luck.

No deep pockets here. I found over the years that using only a few decoys can work better than a bunch when hunting honkers. Mainly because all other goose hunters are putting out huge spreads and geese learn this and "sometimes" feel safer coming into a few decoys. That - and also observing small family groups of honkers just doing there own thing. When I came to this conclusion one day I took out only 3 decoys and it worked. Last week there was only 8 decoys out and that worked.

I too run hardcores when I am able to goose hunt and/or find a field with willing landowner. I personally think the FFDs dont look that great out in the field. They frost easily and can look very "silvery"... I think that no matter what you choose, the change from shells to fullbodies will prove a big difference for you and you should see a dramatic improvement in your success at finishing birds.
