I have had the great good fortune to fish almost every area in B.C. and to fish many several times. Each has their allure and downsides. Langara Island and the west side of the charlottes can provide phenomenal fishing. I have had day there that ear almost unbelievable. But in 12 trips to Langara and the west side , I would rate two as simply amazing six as excellent two as poor and two as absolute busts. There are simply no guarantees, anywhere. The down side to all open west side waters can be big rough seas. In fact big seas are the rule, not the exception in the Charlottes.
Northern coast, Dudes Island, Work Channel can be great, but again, you have to be there when the fish are.
All the west side of Vancouver Island can provide fine fishing, my favorites would de be Kyukuot and Nootka is a fine destination.
The mainland coast around Dundas Island and Work Channel often fishes well for big springs and coho. Rivers Inlet has often phenomenal coho fishing as well as the famous big springs.
As my mentor Rikk Taylor loved to say “Every lodge in B.C. has great fishing at least two weeks a year. The trick is being there when it happens.”
The east side of Vancouver Island IMHO is a mere shadow of its former glory. I have fished Campbell River many times from 1975 until last year and the runs there have steadily declined.

I don’t know much about Port Hardy but have heard good things about their big hook nosed coho.
I guess the bottom line is you need to decide how much you can spend, do you s deal with big water well, what species you want and if you want to be guided or not.
There are a ton of great choices. It’s a dilemma I deal with every year. So many good places to fish so little time.

All good stuff as well dave.
Guided or Un-guided...here's what I do know as of today...

$1.00cdn = $ 1.23U.S.

It has been years since it has been this cheap to come BC if you take the recent drop in fuel costs and the exchange.
Whatever the decisions on where or with who...that's the individuals choices.
Hope to cross paths with a least a few of you this year..

lot's of Coho for sure Dave but the real drama in Hardy is the Kings...remember..."good things come to those who are willing to explore"
My Dad sort of lived by this moto...I love exploring new areas every chance I get!

I'm looking to bring the family and boat up to Port Hardy this summer. June 29th to July 5th to be exact. Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay and moor our 21 foot boat? I'm hoping the Salmon University information on the area is helpful. It may be worth the money to get a guide for a day to get to know the area.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. We'd like to stay in a cabin/house, or in a hotel/motel with a kitchenette. Thanks everyone.
Oh, is that time of year fair, good, great, excellent or a crap shoot like fishing usually is? We are hoping to troll for some salmon and do some bottom fishing.

Chad,
Thanks for talking to me. I booked with Wade for the dates in my previous post. I hope to run into you while I'm up there. I'll need all the pointers you are willing to give.

I'm heading back to Port Hardy August 12-16. I'm staying at Wade's again. I'm also looking into a radar unit for my boat. I hope to catch up with you guys when I'm there for "the guys trip".

Queen Charlottes hands down one of the best migratory salmon fisheries in the world, no place id rather be in my opinion.

Last year the Charlottes was in general...not that good.
That being said, most of the coast was slower than normal.
I know a ton of guy's that went to the charlotttes last year and the weather was horrible and the fishing was only a mear imagine of seasons past.
If you have deep pockets and an extended period of time, the Charlottes is probably a good place to catch some decent kings on average...
The giants tend to be thin up that way and as the fish move south towards Rivers Inlet...they bunch up more and when they get closer to hakaii, etc....you start to here of the odd large beast being caught.
Last year rivers produced 4 fish over 75lbs that I know of but if you compare that to the amount of gear that was dropped in the water over the summer in that area....your chances are probably better if you try to win the lottery.
