Nope, not just you. I only managed to get out 3 times since the snow started. There was 3 of us on the first trip where we got an almost all mallard limit the rest were widgeon and pins. The second one my buddy and I holed up in a snow blind, and had the most wicked teal shoot. I came home with an all teal limit, and he shot some mallards and widgeon in his limit. Then the last time my Dad and I set up but could not get the mallards to work, and ended up doing a diver (jerky) shoot. We shot widgeon, ringnecks, and scaup (plus a couple of mallards). I also got at least 1 goose on every trip, sometimes more. Here is a couple me and my brother in law jump shot out of a slough.

Its just you guys. Its seems when everybody is having a banner year; I dont get out as much. I did manage to jump two gorgeous drakes this morning when I was "walking the dogs". I need to get way down river for a few days and boost the bird count.

Parker, its not chicken or beef, but with practice its possible to cook some very delicious meals with wild waterfowl. No lie!

I am a public land guy too. During the freeze we had awesome hunting now that they are back in the fields, I am going fishing. I won't hunt again, until I know fresh birds are using my spots. I actually have one spot I may hunt on Sunday, it is being used now.
Parker you missed the boat if you never thought ducks taste good. A fat mallard cooked rare on the grill, is just good meat. I served "duck poppers" (duck, pepper, cream cheese, bacon, grilled) at a party over Christmas, and they disappeared faster than a lot of items on the buffet table. It is all in the preparation.

I was lucky enough to snag a private flooded corn field loaded with'em Keith, otherwise the public ground has also slowed here. As for their eating quality, it's all in how you cook'em. Terayaki and orange/ginger works great or make jerky out of the little buggers. Outside of that that it's just fun as hell to shoot'em and gets me out of the bloody office!

This from the man who doesn't like shellfish. Oh no. I *love* shellfish. It's just that some shellfishes don't love me back. For that reason, I stopped eating most shellfish. I hate the taste of "game". Especially, waterfowl. As I've said before, if there was such a thing as "Shoot-n-Release" on waterfowl, I'd be all over it. Love to hunt 'em. Hate to eat 'em.

You poor SOB's. Now you gotta eat those pieces of turds. And don't be lying to me and tellin' us you actually like to eat water fowl. You sick monkeys! Bingo! You hear all these exotic recipes where you wrap them in bacon or marinade in some strong tasting brine for a week then cover with a fancy glaze. You could make a turd tase good following those recipes. I hunted the shitt out of grain fed waterfowl as a kid. Cannot ever remember an excellent eating one. The guys that shoot hundreds of them, then try find people to give them to kill me.

duck hunting seems to be the only thing this state has going for itself in the hunting department.
alot of my buddies have gave up on big game and small game and just duck hunt now. and bring home limits of ducks every time they go out makes me want to go aswell.

Cuzzin Snit! That last one is a hapless widgeon, lots of them little buggers over he'ah on the wet side of the hill. The duckies kept me from getting cabin fever and with a serious case of OCD, well, I now have to kill them all...again. Poor duckies!

Words of wisdom!
About the only other thing I won't besides game/duck are green peppers. Oh yeah, and shellfish, but that's only because I tend to hurl afterwards, not because I don't like 'em.
My kitchen and bathrooms could use a remodel. Does that count?

The guys that shoot hundreds of them, then try find people to give them to kill me. I'm giving up on trying to convince you guys that ducks and geese taste good. The competition is already too high on the public areas. I never give mine away, as a matter of fact I get a little depressed after I eat the last one for the year. I will say though, widgeon taste horrible, they have to be made in the jerky pile (Just did 4 pounds last night, me and the kids love it). I ate a goose breast last night flank steak style, I marinated it in Olive Oil overnight, and cooked it with Johnny's Salt, same way I cooked my wife's steak right next to it. It wasn't just edible it was delicious. If you overcook them, they suck, cook them right and they are money.

Jerky, sausage, and burger are not exotic.
Those fellas that try to give or pawn off their ducks arent hunters in my book; they are just killers. IMO, if you cant eat it; then dont kill it.

So how many of you guys just breast them out? I did for one season when I was 19 or 20. That was before I knew any better. Now I take breast, legs, heart and gizzard. There is a good chunk of meat on the back of the wing but I havent found a quick way to get to it with out making a mess.

Hang them in the garbage can until they disappear.
NOT.
I don't understand why people throw the legs away. It's the only piece that never dries out when cooking.

So how many of you guys just breast them out? I'll admit to doing it.
I do a lot of ways, but mostly breast them out. On Mallards and Geese I take the leg meat too. Sometimes I will pluck big batches of teal, so they can all be roasted in a pan. Again my favorite way to cook them is grilled straight, so breasting works out really good for me.
