B-RUN STEELY,
Its a crime to remove artifacts from federal lands. I wasn't on federal lands, and it was only a rock when I picked it up. Although the way the Feds handle enemy combatants, I might get arrested, detained, water-boarded, and beaten until such time that the White House determines it is actually only a rock.

to me it looks like a broken piece of columnar basalt. It does almost look like it has sharpening marks, but like mentioned above, tools like an axe were usually churt or obsidian, not basalt. Basalt is very hard, but tends to shatter or fracture. I have seen lots of sharp, broken pieces of basalt. The area it was found could tell you alot too... It looks like it could definitely chop something down.

That's what we in the Army call a B.F.R. or Big F*%cking Rock. It is nice to put in guy's ruck sack on a long road march when we stop for a break and they are off taking a break in the trees.

I'm going to have the last laugh on this one. I got an invite over to visit Ruth Kirk and her husband Richard D. Daugherty at their home, AND I'm bringing my g'dang rock (which is in fact most assuredly an ancient ax probably used by Thor himself).
Ya'll can kiss my ax. And if I'm wrong, I ain't gonna be telling.
My new friends will be speaking at UW later this week.

I wonder how many other wierdos will be showing up with bags of rocks to show to the experts?
They won't mind...I'm sure it happens all the time...
After a few months of reflection, I looked at the pictures again, and it's still a rock.
If it turns out to be an ancient belt sander or prehistoric cheese grater, are you going to open your own natural history museum?
Fish on...
Todd
