Im sure this has been discussed "ad-nausium". Going to Maui next week and going on charter-trip with Fuzzy Alboro, he mentioned they have been having high winds with unusually rough seas, my stomach is already churning. What are any recomendations short of cancelling and snorkeling instead?

Most people say these patches work
http://www.transdermscop.com/

Or you can use something like Marezine. Works, but makes you drowsy.

I've been using something called Gravol (from Canada) and ginger candy.

Those transderm patches work for me and I can get seasick just looking at the ocean. Even use them when I go SCUBA diving. They stay on and work well enough that the boat ride isn't a problem.

Its all a bunch of B.S I have tried em all and gotta say if its time to hurl.. then just have at it. I have puked in every kind of ocean, flat, rough, bumpy, whatever. All those thing do to me is make my puke taste real bad, and kinda make me sleepy. I puke every single time I go out.. and I still do it.

When it's rough out of Maui ... it's a pretty lumpy day out there with Fuzzy ... we had one last year. I'm not immune ... thus why I guide the river and not the salt.

It usually takes a pretty lumpy day to get me sick ... but have NEVER puked with the patch. Always put one on now ... some days I've gotten out and it's been mellow enough that I know I would have been fine anyhow ... but you never know beforehand for sure.

I'd say call your fam doc and have him write you a script.

You'll find snorkeling ain't much fun either if it's too rough. Molokini was a barren wasteland last year in terms of boats and we were one of just a couple that tried. I helped a number of people back in and onto the ladder that tried and it was too much. Corey's sis and Aunt were amongst them ... there, Corey's sis is a wuss smile

Another vote for the patch.

Knock on wood - I've never been seasick, but I don't want to start.

Started taking some Drammamine when I was doing the 1-day trips out in the Ocean out of Westport. It worked, but made me damn sleepy.

Tried the patch on my last tuna trip. We were out a good 60 miles or so. Worked like a charm and never did get tired, or have any strange side effects.

I did hear that the patch releases enough medicine for an average height/weight human. I have heard that really small and large folks have a hard time with it, as it will either release too much or too little medicine for your body size.

If you're one of these people, ask your doctor about the pill form of what is in the patch. At least at that point, you can the correct dosage for your body size.

When I was a little kid I would take a benadryl and of course would make me rather tired. But never did puke. Luckily the last few years I don't get sick at all.

Another key is to be well rested before going out.Spent years bobbing around in the Berring sea.Even after being out for months ,You get reel tired and you find yourself feeling the effects.

The transdermal scopalomine gets the nod from me. I have yet to puke while using it. The other thing to remember when using these types of meds is #1 stay hydrated and #2 ease back on the alcohol consumption the night before the trip. In other words, don't get wicked hammered the night before the trip.

The over the counter chewable tabs come in a "less drowsy" form and work pretty good. I have found that if you take 1 the night before at bedtime then another when you get up before going out it works better. Or you could just start drinking Mai tai's at breakfast and by the time you start fishing you wont even know the boat is rocking.

In fact.. the last time I chundered.. I looked at Parker and said " Dude... I think I'll puke now "... T-Bird was wobbling around the boat white as a sheet and I thought for awhile I was going to get away with it. Had done just fine for like 6 hours. Then I dropped my mental guard and just decided " who the hell am I fooling " and it was off to the races.

Hank.. I got that 8 foot mark I am pretty sure on several occasions

Over the years, I've tried mothion sickness medication administered in every style imaginable. I was usually okay going out and coming back. When we shut down to trolliing, I was good for getting the gear in the water and then......If you can stay busy and try to keep your mind of the motion, it can help.

If it is still available, Marezine worked (sort of) for me. With any of the products, I'd suggest to start taking them the day before if you can. I also think the wrist bands (acupressure) help.

I usually see techni-color the first day in the gulf. All days after that, I seem to be "acclimatized". Nothing beats a daily dose of the gulf no matter how rough! Although, the last couple of seasons I have been taking Meklazine. It's use is primarily for air sickness. Seems to work good if taken a night before. After a recent surgery I was given a (hydro)drowsy of a pill and didn't care to much for the "out of control feeling". So the dr. gave me a prescription of promethazine. So I asked the pharmacy what these would do mixed with meklazine. He kinda laughed and said meklazine is a fraction of promethazine. So if your serious about not getting sick try Promethazine (also known as phenergan). Hope this helps.

I have heard that packing some candied ginger with you and just keep munching has been successful.

You know what was truly funny that day was that morning was pretty rough and you managed to not get sick. About noontime, the seas went flat and it was really nice out. Boat almost stopped rocking. That's when you, standing next to me, technicolored yawn for the Sea Gods. It was over for you at that point. Game over.

I still *owe* you couple of salmon, by the way, as I said I'd give you mine. I never forget a promise. I'll make due one of these days/years.

TDumbass drank an entire 1/5th of Te-kill-ya the night before. "Gee, I don't know why I'm getting sea sick...." rofl

At one point in the day, you were puking on my right side and THurl was puking on my left side.

Sol was down the line taking photos and laughing his ass off.

Super.

I remember this one guy he told us he never got seasick and could not see how anyone could get sick we had barely left Dutch and he was puking ,but after a couple of days he was fine we started getting busy and he forgot about it .What you need to do is not think about it ,focus on something else and do not try to fight the motion of the boat it is a mental thing and nothing more
