I was wondering if any of you have been running into any bear bait sites in the past couple years when you were out in the woods? It seems like I stumble into them just about every summer....

I ran into a lot pre-ban but not too many since.
First one I found was right after I moved here in 92. It was a pig's head nailed to stump out near Enumclaw. Took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on....

It actually seems like I run into more bait now then before the ban...

I found one last year and called the game department. I explained exactly where it was and even offered to bring someone too it. I have never heard back and last time I checked it was still there.

I try not to second guess myself Brion. Taxes the brain too much you know. And this was way before any of us had even heard of horse love!
Tell you what though. You try walking through the woods at dawn (going trout fishing) and find a pig head nailed to stump. It was a bit strange.

There are bait sites run by bear management hunters on some private timberlands where tree girdling is rampant. I don't believe that there are any on state lands, just private timber lands. Maybe that is what you found.

The middle to end of March is when they start getting active again, so I suspect the management hunters are starting these up again to catch some of the early bears.

No, the bait site was found on State land, my buddy is a Forrester for the state in the area and confirmed it was on state land.
