I'm wondering what the applicable laws are. If this happens in Somalia's territorial waters, presumably Somalia makes the call, and they said other nation's forces could operate against piracy in its waters. What about in international waters? I suppose the Law of the Sea applies, but I wonder what makes it applicable. Interesting notion since piracy has become so popular there. Seems like the key if for piracy not to pay; then there's no incentive. If the average hijacking pays about one million bucks, it won't stop soon.

I know the girl friend of a ship captain that knows the captain that volunteered to go with the pirates. Gotta give that guy props, big time! Put himself in the line of fire, attempted escape, and was eventually rescued. Book/Movie stuff, but real world hero.

Put a few wolves in sheeps clothing out on the high seas. (Container ships loaded with a metric ass ton of weaponry and fighting forces, and maybe a helicopter or two). Let the pirates attack, kill most of them, follow the esapees back to the mother ship and blast them out of the water.

You must be OK with unlimited collateral damage. Most of the small boats in the area are fishing boats, and they aren't causing anyone any harm. Dogfish's suggestion looks good to me. It treats the problem of piracy with no adverse effects to innocent people.

International law says private ships can not leave the port armed. Why not equip a few of the high speed boats like the Coasties have in the port os Seattle and just teather them along side until a threat is detected. If they are not needed (or even if they are) then hook them up with the next target ship going back the other way. I doubt it would take very many thwarted attemps before the incidence of attacks would drop way off or stop almost completely. I'm surprised that Blackwater or one of those security companys kicked out of Iraq hasn't started offering this service already. Plenty of mercinaries out there to man up the boats.
