If they made it private, they could actually lower prices and the state would still make more money. Most the liquor stores near me close at 7:00, which is crazy. Think of how often you'd be heading to Costco to fill up the liquor cabinet versus giving your buddy some coin for his return trip from Reno.

Of course, if they did try to take it public the holier then thou crowd would get seriously bent out of shape. I always loved their TV commercials against booze and gambling. Little kid looking through the glass door, everyone is drinking and pulling on slots. Booze will make you do some crazy stuff..... and they are going to protect you from yourself.

I say take it private. While they are at it, provide non tribal casinos with the same gaming rights as tribal casinos.

Why do you hurt us so? You must have driven through the central valley in summer. Drink some of our cheaper booze while flying along in the 'stang and head for the coastal mountains or the Cascades/Sierras. None of us in "The State of Jefferson" really care if SoCal burns to a crisp.

I wish that was the case with me. Even 9:00 seems to early. The liquor store that was closest to me closed and is now an Outback Steakhouse.

And so began your long, downward spiral into steelhead addiction! Nice fish at any time in the history of the Russian, they just don't get much bigger than that!!! Caught my first steelhead when I was seven out behind Fitch Mountain. I had an old (even then) A.B.U. Garcia 2600, and actually, I still have that reel. NO drag except for the thumb - pretty much prepared me for life!

The thing is dewb... I've probably been up here since before you was just a twinkle in your daddy's eye.

I caught my first steelhead by accident out of the Navarro river near Ft. Bragg back in 1974.

I make it back to Cali a couple of time a year for business and to visit my brother in Napa... and even all there years later I still get a little homesick. I grew up fishing stripers and sturgeon in Suisun Bay and the delta around Rio Vista. I've backpacked through and fished trout in most of the Sierras too. I don't think I'd ever move back, but I still do miss the weather.

sounds like you have some good memories i lived in redding for a spell and fished the sac and whiskey town lake. it was nice, but i was glad to leave.

Actually Mike, I was at Boy Scout Summer camp and I had brought my trout rod with me. We were catching what we thought were trout... but were probably smolts with small black Rooster-tails. I made a cast towards a log jam and hooked something huge. I landed it and thought I had caught the biggest trout of my life. One of the camp counselors told me it was a steelhead... which at that time I didn't know what they were. It was about 8 pounds.

And that fish ruined you for life! Me, I'm just ruined

Oh yeah, this thread is about alcohol, so in about an hour, I'll go drown my sorrows in some nice Black Butte Porter and clean up the garage.

An oldie but a goodie:

A Texan, a Californian, and Oregonian are out riding horses. The Texan pulls out an expensive bottle of whiskey, takes a long draught, then another and suddenly throws it into the air, pulls out his gun and shoots the bottle in midair.

We have been down this road before it is so pedestrian. Anyway I will stock up my Patron at Costco in Ca. before I leave again. And Lord knows I promised to pick Jerry one up a year ago. Of course most of the people you meet in WA are friendly and accepting of newcomers - - because they are immigrants themselves.

When I was a student and young man, 90% of the people I knew were also from WA. Today, over 50% of the people are meet have immigrated here. The demographics have decidedly changed.

I never heard any CA bashing until the 1980s when it began to be popularized by a now long-gone Seattle Times reporter Emmet Watson. The issue was only partly that a lot of Californians were moving into WA. The rub was this:
"The weather is crummy, always grey and rainging." Uh, why'd you move here?
"The wages are lower than in CA." Uh, why'd you move here?

And then there was the direct adverse effect, which you may be a part of as a WA homeowner. Folks from CA sold their CA residence for what amounts to a small fortune here, then move to WA, plunk down cash for a premium residence, thinking it's a bargain, but effectively driving up real estate prices for locals who have to come up with the money off the local economy.

Of course there are generalizations and stereotypes, but they have factual foundations, not surprisingly.

Enjoy the view on Whidbey and understand that it used to be remote and sparsely populated . . .

I make as much fun of our state as anyone else on this board, mostly because we do have some ridiculous things that go on down here, but all places have their own quirks, like state run liquor stores. I think I got us back on topic, for now.

It cracks me up that this state thinks that keeping stores open longer and building new stores is going to bring in more revenue. Its the same folks buying the same amounts of booze but now they can shop a little later at night and not have to drive as far to get it...

that's my gripe. i don't know if i'm ever going to be able to afford a house at this rate, much less one that i'd want to own!(i'd rather live in an apartment the rest of my life than one of those cookie cutter houses in a tract that's 3' from the neighbors on all sides).

Hankster please, I am an adult now I am taking those pills to eliminate pain... As far as real estate goes as far as I am concerned it is the same everywhere. Some places values rise faster and drop faster. Some places the opposite is true. The fundamental principals are the same, supply and demand and location, location, location.The only way I have been able to do it is buy fixer uppers. I may have mentioned in a drug induced state. The house I bought in the great state of Washington was in a remote spot ( well Kinda) had sat on the market for over a year, I cant remember if it was 2 years. No body wanted it, So I took it. The view is unrivaled of the Mutiny Bay and hurricane ridge. Contrary to Addicted's style I worked my butt off on that place all my weekends that were available. The first 4 years were as a rule spent working on the place. My point is simple the population of the west coast is going to explode... prepare yourself. If I could afford to right now I would be looking to purchase investment property. The people are going to come if the predictions are accurate so brace yourself.

If I had the money, I would buy real estate, starting with the dump next door that shares the same Mt. Rainier view.
