Aside from my usual obsession with hunting & fishing I ever so often venture to the dragstrip to witness the NHRA nationals.
I was into hot rods as a younger man and find the drags a real change of pace.

The Seattle NHRA nationals are coming up July 17 - 19th and If I can urge any of you guys to go, you will not be disappointed ( I recommend friday night qualifying as there are less people and the fire belching from the headers is remarkable).

There is little, if anything that compares in violence to two 8,000 horsepower nitro belching monsters blasting off the line and reaching 300+ mph in under 4 seconds, they are the fastest accelerating vehicles on earth and they defy description.
The roar literally shakes the grandstands (and your teeth!)
TV does a grave injustice to portraying this spectacle.
I've sent diehard NASCAR fans to the drags and they were in awe of the power.
An NHRA ticket also allows access to the pits where you can meet the drivers and watch teardown & rebuilds etc...

Here is a link to Pacific Raceway with directions to the track if you think you might be interested.

One wonders when the electrics (NEDRA) are going to replace the fueled? It will sure change the ambience.

We used to sneak into the Evergreen Speedway in my youth. They'd stamp your hand to go in and out and we'd ask a kid to see his hand stamp and pull out the assorted felt pens and draw it. Worked every time. Couldn't afford to get in otherwise.

My two uncles have ALWAYS been dragster obsessed since well before I was ever born. One is more of a mechanic and the other is more of a driver type so at close-to-50 years of age, they decided to go for it. They bought a top-alcohol dragster and have run it for a couple years now. They've blown through a lot of money and parts (the cost for certifying parts alone is extreme) but are living their dreams. The whole thing drives my grandfather (their father) insane due to the time/money involved. Fittingly, they named their car "Dad's Disgust". rofl

The just bought a nitro funny car that should hit the track in the next couple of years.

They always need sponsors if anyone wants to get involved!

Here is a youtube clip of my uncle Scott almost killing himself and totaling the car. Talk about a hell of a save!

You know I never thought much of the drag races until I went and saw the big boys run! What an experience. Can't describe it until you have been.

Of course it isn't nearly as fun now that they have straps on the blowers! Nothing like watching a blower come flyin out of a hood and cartwheel down the track!

It's pretty cool...my cousin has a SuperComp car, so I head out there every once in a while to watch him race, and then stick around for the whole weekend.

Fish on...

The money it takes to run of those machines is astronomical.
I know a lady whose ex husband had a top alcohol dragster, she says she had to divorce him before he demolished the family fortune.
eek2 eek2 eek2

Here are some intersting facts on the nitro burning monsters...

* One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500.

* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1½ gallons of nitromethane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.

* A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster supercharger.

* With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.

* At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitromethane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.

* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

* Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

* In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8G's .

* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.

* Top Fuel Engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!

* Including the burnout the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.

* The red-line is actually quite high at 9500 rpm.

* The Bottom Line; Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated US $1,000.00 per second. The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter mile (10/05/03, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is 333.00 mph (533 km/h) as measured over the last 66' of the run (09/28/03 Doug Kalitta).

Putting all of this into perspective:

You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter "twin-turbo" powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him.

Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race course.

Exactly.
A lot of people think to themselves "What could be exciting about driving a car in a straight line for four or five seconds?"

rofl

You watch one of these things come to life with that unmistakable cackle then the eyewatering nitro fumes overwhelm you.
They radiate such power that I imagine only the space shuttle launch really compares.

It is something you have to see to believe, it is indescribable.

Seems Humanly impossible to reach 333 MPH in a .25 mile from a dead start. The funny cars aren't far behind either...simply staggering!

The last time I had any interest in drag racing, Don Gartlets was still trying to hit a NHRA 200 mph in the 1/4 mile. I was in high school, and inspired by peers, bought a '55 Chevy, 265 punched to 301, with a gas sucking 4 bbl, and still couldn't crack 8 seconds out at the cattails where we used to race on the straight flat stretch of Hwy 507. One of the better days of my life was when I sold that money pit; I nearly had to work double shifts at the ranch to support it. $1,000 a second - extreme ouch! Glad I got rid of it. It didn't even have seat belts. I probably would have died.

July 17; it is almost tempting.

If you can come up with the extra coin, getting a pit pass and getting up close and personal is a blast!

Every ticket at a NHRA national event IS a pit pass.
That really makes it cool, it is the only professional sport that alows you to mingle with the pros.

Stammy, you would freak out if you saw the nitro burning cars go.
They even make 6 second , 200mph Pro Stock cars seem slow.
Try to make that race, you'd love it.

Had a friend that ran Pro Stock at SIR in the early 70"s, yup it was way fun.
