We will be out there Mon-Fri, first time to NB although second guessing my decision after the recent reports in the San Juans.
SeaDNA how far of a run is Umatilla from Big Salmon? Any other tips you can offer for fishing that area and is it a tide driven fishery?
Big Salmon to Umatilla is about 18 miles +/- a little. It's not as tidal driven as things are in the sound. The best tip is to find the commercial/Indian trollers and fish where they are at. Those guys know what they're doing so do the same. I usually fish Wadaah early in the AM, then hit the NE corner of Table Top, then Limp Spot, then Umatilla. If I'm not getting bit every 5-8 mins (with 3 rods in the water), I move. When you're done with Umatilla, move in a few miles to Cape Alava and finish out your bottom fish limit in an hour or so. While the San Juans sound good right now, no need to second guess the Neah Bay decision. If you know what to do and stick with it, you're pretty much guaranteed limits at Neah Bay. I've not fished area 7 much, but I'm 99% confident that I will limit everyone on the boat on salmon and bottom fish every day that I'm at Neah. The only real question is whether the limits will include kings. Coho should be no problem and we'll probably find our bonus pinks too. bottom fish (10 rock cod + 5 others) is a no brainer if you get a little south of Tatoosh.
Give me a holler when you're out there. I'll be a C-Dory on C-Dock and I'll be staying in a cabin at Hobuck Beack resort. I monitor 16,67 and 68.
