Van stolen 35 years ago is recovered THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SPOKANE, Wash. -- A Volkswagen van stolen 35 years ago from Spokane has been found in a shipping container at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport.
The Spokesman-Review newspaper reported that customs agents found the 1965 van on Oct. 19 when they opened a shipping container bound for The Netherlands. Running the vehicle identification number revealed it was still listed as stolen. The current owner is an insurance company, which presumably paid off the owner. The original owner has not been identified.
Law officers said the van, which is in great shape, was reported stolen from a repair shop on July 12, 1974, while Spokane was hosting the 1974 World's Fair.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating

Read one couple years back but it involved a 60's something Corvette and it had been maintained perfectly. Guy it was stolen from got it back and was one happy guy for two reasons. One got his vette back which he loved, two the model / year made it worth a fortune.

The insurance company may "own" it, but most states have a "Insurance Rule" that requires the Insurance companies to offer it back to the insured for what they paid for it plus reasonable interest. Call Right of First Refusal. I'm still waiting for my 1968 Shelby GT500, serial number 00041, stolen in Portland in 1974, to be returned. By the way, 00041 is/was the first 1968 that rolled off the assembly line and I've been told, probably the rarest Shelby Mustang ever made. I am more than willing (and able) to refund to State Farm the $2,450 they paid me for it. The "Complete Story" with a picture of it can be seen at www.Coralsnake.com

An old VW Van should be treated as a potential WMD the way those things would catch fire.

Kick as paint & emblems too.
