when brewer's book is finally finished it will only require a mild buzz to understand. there will be plenty of "aha" nuggets too, however also seasoned equally with useless lumps of "huh?" coal.

Realize that Jed co-founded Pen-Tac. I'm not sure that talking down the #1 competitor made him an idiot? Besides, in deep, fast, cold water (ie most winter steelhead water), his statement is true.

The main flaw I find with the book is that he didn't fish much of the northwest before writing it. Most of his fishing experience was in the midwest, southern Willamette Valley, and central Oregon coast. The way fish respond to various spinners in other parts of the northwest is sometimes very different than what Jed wrote. The section on reading water for steelhead based on temperature is the best how-to-read-steelhead-water section I've read in any book. Regardless of how I fish, I still read water with "Jed's eyes".

Also, Jed is a PHD psychologist. This book coined the term "threshhold of attraction", which is the best explaination I've ever heard for why fish bite some lures and not others. I've seen Herzog himself reference the term as revolutionary in the world of steelhead fishing.

The book is a must-have for any serious hardware fisherman.

W/C's right, especially about the regional focus of the Davis book and how it doesn't apply further north. Still a top 3 book in my fishing library though. Too bad he turned into a bass fisherman cuz I bet he'd have some useful nuggets of info to disseminate these days,

I have an idea if you want a deep running spinner try a mepps flying c. I smoked coho on the pink hootchie, silver blade and the orange/ silver bl. River fishers are just another expensive gimmick to buy, don't waste your money. Those sickle hooks look and sound wicked but I like a siwash gami any day, river fisher= false sense of confidence. Blue fox catch more fish than all spinners companies 10 times over. And they are affordable and available anywhere.

A false sense of confidence sure seems to bring a lot of fish to hand to those 25 yokels laugh

While I agree with you 100% about Todd's products, those same 25 guys could catch fish with Blue Fox, Pen-Tac, and (gasp) even a Stee Lee because they are good fisherman and know how to read water and present the lure.

Fact is how many times can the wheel be re-invented. There are so many spoons and spinner companies. I built my own spinners for years buying parts from b.c. Angling post. Saying river fisher is THE BEST and only spinner to fish is foolhardy. But go ahead, if that's the lure your confident in, fish it. Hyped out lure on your line can only attract em if you know how to read water.

It will all be lumps of coal. smile However, there are posters on this board that could place those lumps in their rectum and produce a diamond in a week or two. evil

Say whatever about the RVRFSTR stuff, I personally like the spinners. But I will tell you with all surety that since I have replaced gami siwashes with the sickle siwashes my catch rates have improved by 25% at least.

Before I would expect to land 50% of the fish I hooked while casting spinners and now I am easily over 75%. It's been a good year to experiment and see what works the best due to the large return of coho on my home rivers.

I'll take a BF spinner in a 5 or 6 with a sickle siwash any day of the week over round style hooks.

So I come back from BC just in time to read 8 pages of funnyshit on a company I started over four years ago. This would normally send a guy into all smiles... But the expensive gimmick part is where personal offense becomes hard to ignore.

"I" designed every item we sell, this after fishing boatloads of other lures (and inferior hooks), for over 30 years. If Rvrfshr was an intended vehicle to getting rich, well I reallyfucked that up. I can't recall ever making a statement that said "river fisher is THE BEST and only spinner to fish"... I use lots of other company's lures, sometimes on a daily basis, and sleep fine at night.

I would take a challenge to fish next to baked salmon, him using Flying C's and me using an "invisible" primer grey painted "river fisher"... just for outcome shitsandgigs...

If you don't want to buy the stuff, don't buy it. If you want to remain "unique" in your approach by using Blue Fox, Mepps and Rooster Tails fitted with Gamis, by all means do so.

I can never understand why thefuck a "select" bunch of dudes that go fishing shitall during the course of the year, know everything there is about the manufacturers, company motives, and the vein/hair color of said's shaft and balls.

The wheel has been reinvented many times, each time better than the last. Go Todd's company 2010 !

I love it when I hear someone "expects" to lose 50percent of the fish they hook and magically a hook gives them the ability to land 25 % more fish. Sickle hooks geometry is flawed. Why do they only come in heavy gauge wire. Thin wire hooks penetrate easier and there is this thing called a DRAG on a reel. I have caught 30 pound ocean kings on size 1 gami and didn't straighten the hook.

Why would anyone choose to use a size 1 hook in the ocean for Kings or silvers?
