Pe Ell crossbow shooting suspect: 'I just wanted to scare him'

The Pe Ell man accused of trying to kill a man he knew with a crossbow made his first appearance in court Monday, his family in the audience.

Court documents allege that Lehman Neil Delavergne sat in wait at the home of his 62-year-old victim last Wednesday in the 100 block of Katula Road, shot him in the neck with a crossbow bolt and stabbed him several times in the abdomen, face, hands and chest.

Delavergne’s wife, Sophea, told officers the two were having marital problems and that Delavergne was angry because she was staying at the victim’s house, according to the documents.

Police couldn’t track him down until Friday, when Delavergne’s grandfather Vernon Delavergne told him to turn himself in, according to police reports.

The grandfather was in the courtroom Monday to keep a close eye on the case. He said he couldn’t believe what he’d heard about his grandson, though he said there was heavy drug use in the family and said both of Lehman Delavergne’s parents are already in jail.

"When he walked in late one night, he told me he was in trouble," Vernon Delavergne said. "I told him the only way out of it to keep from getting shot is to turn yourself in."

Lehman Delavergne told officers he’d been lying in the woods for the two days leading up to the arrest, according to court documents. Vernon Delavergne said his grandson was shaken up when he walked in the room, and had been complaining about an injured finger from a knife wound.

After the arrest, Lehman Delavergne told officers, "I’m sorry I’m coming down right now so I don’t wanna answer any questions," according to the court documents.

He added, "I never meant to hurt him. I just wanted to scare him. I never meant to hurt the guy."

If convicted of attempted murder, Delavergne faces life in prison and a $50,000 fine. Lewis County Superior Court Judge James Lawler set bail at $1 million, saying he was concerned that Delavergne was a flight risk and could compromise the safety of the public.

Deputy Prosecutor Collin Hayes said Delavergne has a collection of convictions under his belt, including assault, malicious mischief, bail jumping, multiple counts of domestic violence, failure to appear, drug possession and burglary.

"The state cannot picture any greater risk to the community than that posed by Mister Delavergne," Hayes said in court.

Delavergne’s next court date is scheduled for Wednesday.

He's only had 37 court cases in Washington, 8 this year. Could happen to anyone. He's got a good heart, is a great father, he wouldn't hurt a soul, and I'm sure he was just turning his life around.

Reminds me of my former clientele. Sure is nice to be retired and not deal with this $hit anymore.

And to think Pe Ell used to be such a peaceful little town, except for the occasional fisticuffs between a couple loggers at the tavern. The biggest problem with meth is that it isn't fatal soon enough.

Seattle police say an intoxicated 25-year-old man, who told officers he believed he was a ninja, was impaled on a metal spike Monday night after a failed attempt to jump a 5-foot fence.

Around 11:15 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Seventh Avenue after a 41-year-old man called police to say he had been assaulted, said police spokeswoman Renee Witt. Officers arrived and found the impaled would-be ninja, Witt said.

It turns out the older man, who was heavily intoxicated, tried to go into a sports bar in the 600 block of King Street, Witt said. The younger man, who isn't a bar employee, barred the man from going inside-- and an argument between the two men escalated into a fight.

At one point, the men chased each other in the street, she said.

In an attempt to get away, the younger man "thought he'd basically be able to jump over this fence, and he didn't quite make it," Witt said.

As a police account of the incident notes, "Clearly he was overconfident in his abilities."

That's when the older man called police to say he'd been assaulted.

As police arrived to search for a suspect, one officer heard the 25-year-old's screams and found him stuck on the fence with the metal spike jutting out from his buttock, Witt said. The man was bleeding profusely.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center, she said. Questioned at the hospital, the man told police he believed he was a ninja.

Since the two men "were in the middle of the street, chasing each other around," Witt said officers determined neither man would be arrested on suspicion of assault.

How about the local memorial to the tweaker that got killed in town. I think the daily zero ran two or three memorial stories for the guy, who had been arrested around 50 times in his criminal career. Of which I had some personal involvement.

It's nice that the paper wastes that much ink for that guy. Its kind of like he was some kind of hero...too bad that they don't seem to care as much for our fallen soldiers.......

That POS had it coming. He had like 60 arrests for theft alone. The guy who did it should get a medal. He was probably sole responsible for most of the Catalytic Converter thefts around here.

My guess is he tried to rip off someone in a meth deal.

I want to go kick over that guy's memorial.

Aparently someone is thinking about opening the Lebam tavern back up.
