Guntest magazine and other owners have had decent luck with Hipoint. Their carbine is a decent, if ugly little shooter. I'd buy one.

Magazines always like new things....they're in the business of liking things.
  As for me.....
I would rather own and rely on a good rock....rather then a Hi-Point.
I have shot a few and would not own one if it was given to me.
But then again, I don't know much about guns....

Hi-point has one thing gong for it......beauty.
Actually they are not the Davis, Jennings, Lorcin of the cheapo pistola world because they actually, usually function....with ball.
But like BigDaddy I'll take SkyGuys' Kimber over the Hi-Point for all kinds of reasons.
I am not a 1911 guy although I appreciate everything about them and Kimber makes some fine 1911's... I've yet to see another 1911 do (out of the box for the money) what a good Kimber will.
They have taken care of Dennis their main gunsmith ( or rather he took care of himself) so now getting good service is not the problem it used to be.
Heck my main hunting rifle is a Kimber Montana and figure on at least one or maybe 4 more.
If Hi-point made a good hunting rifle I still wouldn't entertain the thought. But my mileage has always varied....

I think the mention of Kimber and Hi-Point in the same thread should be banned.

I think they're made by Cobra now. You're more likely to injure/maim yourself with one of those than you are your target. I used to own a Davis .380. After one trip to the range I unloaded, put it away, and sold it a week later to a co-worker who I didn't really like that much.

Forget anything that requires batteries. Good open sights and good knowledge of how to fire a pistol trumps batteries any day. I already know exactly where that .45ACP is going as soon as I draw. Draw about 10,000 times and it becomes automatic. Thanks Sky-Guy for making me eat crow on that statement. Right after stating this, a opened up my home to a newly used Kimber Pro II "Tactical" model. Granted, I can turn the Lay-Zor ON/OFF by a switch, but it was fun to play with. "Put the red dot where you want the bullet to go. Pull the trigger. Say OOOOH and AHHHH."
