Question: What is a fair price for a 1993 Yamaha 40HP electric Start motor?

This motor was bought brand new in 93, was used on weekends in the summer months (not sure of the hours on it) then left sitting on the boat in 1995 uncovered till now. It does turn over(but does not start) need to get rid of the old gas in the line and hope fully that will do it. The body /Cowling has some scratches on it and the paint shows oxidation but underneath the covers the motor looks to be in excellent shape. I am sure it needs a tune up. The prop does have sign of use and would not hurt to replace it.

Reason I am asking this was, I received this boat with this motor. It came on a 16' fiberglass semi- flat bottom boat( tender ). I was told that the motor was not powerful enough to plane but good for puttering around the sound. I was thinking of selling the motor and getting a 75 or 90 HP instead or just get rid of the whole thing, boat, motor and trailer and get something else.

Hey Matt, I hope you hosed down the cyl walls with WD-40 or the likes and turned it over by hand??? before hitting the starter, the cyl walls had to have some crud on them if it was outside like you indicate, carbs will probably need to be gone through as well, hope you didnt break any rings??.
go online and type NADA that wil go to the used car guide and there will be links for outboard motors, it is way off in my opionion, but who am I, you have a great motor if it runs right, if it is messed up or needs alot of tinkering who knows maybe a parts motor now. are you close to Bothell??
if ya are call me,425-821-9511 Bud.

A 40 horse should get you around just fine. I have a 40hp on my boat and it gets two guys and all gear up to 43mph no problemo, as seen in avatar.

Thanks Budnate for the info, will be giving the motor a WD 40 shower.

Skyguy, this boat is really heavy for its size. I dont have a pic here at work but I can post a few pics of it later when I get home.

Budnate, did what you told me and it startd right up. I wanted to let it run longer but it was getting dark and the fuel was empty and the stupid battery is old and it just did not have the juice to turn over it again with more fuel. Thanks again for the help.

Great!, go buy a product called seafoam by OMC this goes in the fuel, it will clean out the carbs and help the rings, you may get lucky and not have to mess with the carbs, keep a eye on the waterpump as well, make sure its not getting hot!, with the cover off you should be able to hold your hand on the head, if it gets to hot shut here down just because its peeing water dont mean its getting water pumped up tight in all the places it should,

see ya, Bud.

Once you get that Yamaha running right, I'd consider keeping the package. Cool little boat, and looks built to stout.

So what are you willing to part with the motor for "as is"? Send me an email or message been looking to replace my 28hp with a 40hp.
