Like Sam, I left my favorite rod leaning against the truck after fishing one day and drove away. A nice custom St. Croix my brother wrapped for me and gave me as a birthday present. Unlike Sam it wasn't there when I returned 15 minutes later. Telling the story doesn't make me feel any better though,

Oh that reminds me of another 70's story.
Launching at Kenmore to go jig for silvers on a rainy morning, left a rod leaning up against the truck and when I backed up to park, ran right over it and the reel, Smashed both the rod and my nice ABU.
Lucky it was a quick trip up the hill to the house to get another set-up.

I've never had a fish steal one, but one just fell out of the boat this summer at Double Bluff, never saw it, just couldn't find it when we were setting up to start casting...bummer.

When I was a kid I slipped on the ice while fishing off of Pier 56 in Seattle for true cod, threw the whole kit-and-caboodle right it the drink...the line tangled all around the dude's line next to me and he reeled it back up...that would have really sucked, since I was 9 years old and it was the day after Christmas, and I just got the rod/reel the day before from Santa...

Most of my *missing* rods stem from busting the hell out of 'em, which I do on a fairly regular basis, or just giving them away when the right mood hits me, and then trying to find it a few months later after I've forgotten that I gave it away...

"Hey, isn't that my rod?"

"Yeah, dumbass...you gave it to me, remember?"

"Uhh...yeah, I think so."

Still fishing 2 Lamiglas rods from the first run of blanks made in Kent back in the mid 70's. Only one has had to be repaired and that was my fault. I did the repairs myself in our company autoclave!
