Saw this little snippet in the latest Fly Rod & Reel and thought it was pretty damn good.
Speaking Steelhead by John Larison
Anthropologists tell us that a defining feature of a "tribe" is the presence of shared but localized lexicon. And as anglers everywhere know, nothing molds a tribe faster than a shared tent, a shared truck, and a shared mission. Consider the following steelheader glossary.
Steelhead Juice
Pabst Blue Ribbon beer (simply PBR to it's faithful) in the pint size can. Known to improve camp karma when consumed warm and with little concern for the time of day.
Player
A steelhead willing to take a skated dry fly. Some players become "takers."
Taker
The best kind of steelhead, one that has displayed a willingness to strike the skated fly. The opposite of a "dour bastard."
Dour Bastard
A steelhead smarter than the anglers watching it.
Pull (Or Grab)
The slam of the swung fly by an eager steelhead, often resulting in a loss of the anlger's balance and, occassionally, in a short swim.
Hook-Up
A title assigned to all pulls that result in a) at least one jump, b) at least one run, or c) at least three utterances of the phrase "oh please gawd."
Ambiguous Incident
An interaction between fish and fly that defies classification. Often results in the angler turning towards his buddy on the shore and saying "What the F was that?"
Fishy
An adjective applied to all riffles, runs and tailouts comprised of a walking speed current and fish-collecting structure, such as boulders, ledges and depressions.
Juicy
A superlative applied to those fishy riffles, runs and tailouts that provide anglers with a sense that he "can't go wrong."
Trout Water
Those riffles, runs and tailouts-or sections therein-thought to be devoid of steelhead. Also used in adjective form, "trouty."
Greasy Lie
An especially juicy place within an otherwise trouty riffle, run or tailout.
Jedi-Spot
The creme of the creme of holding water. A place that appears trouty, but produces steelhead consistently. The opposite of a "tourist hole."
Tourist Hole
A riffle, run, or tailout-within easy sight and walking distance of a road-that looks fishy, but never, ever produces steelhead. The place fly shops send guys with out-of-state plates.
Anadromous
1) denotes any species of fish that descends from its natal stream to the ocean and returns to spawn. 2) an adjective employed by exhausted chromeheads to describe any activity that provides returns with no correlation to investment.
