Gorgeous fish deserve top shelf treatment. A rubber net wouldn't be a bad investment. +1 on a knotless CnR net... Frabills, Beckmans and Finsaver bags are all awesome.

Blades clued him in on the fact that winter run nates taste like sand paper so he poached it. Funny if you were referring to "poached" as in the cooking technique. Really funny if you were referring "poached" as in what Blades did on the Skagit or what anyone would be doing to a dead wild fish on the Sky! Good one!

John the next time we go out, your more than welcome to try my Beckmans knotless CnR net to see if you like it. I think i got mine for 109 dollars, with an adjustable handle. The thing makes it a breeze for when you actually have to net a fish, and its allot better on the fish that you plan on releasing. As far as the fish being released, picture perfect release...  I hope to pick up another nice native Friday on the Sky, and many of his Coastal relatives this weekend...

Always net my natives outside of the boat meaning both the fighter and the netter are in the water and not in the boat...I use extreme caution the entire time...and the fish barely even touches the net before I have em out, unhooked, snapped photos, and they are on their way. Ondarvr was there...that fish was well cared for and I'd say from the time she was netted to the time she swam out of my hands...45 secondsish.

I don't think anyone is "actually" trying to say you did a bad job. Fish looks well cared for, however a knotless CnR net is the way to go when you "Do have to net a fish". Looks like the fish made out just fine and I am sure a fine job was done. Nets are just plain hard on fish. Better to take every measure possible to send the wild ones on their way as healthy as can be given the circumstances.

As long as you only use your net as a "net pen" to calm the fish while removing the hook and don't "lift" or "drag" the fish using your net I don't see anything harmful with using a nylon net. It's only when you "lift" with a net and the fish starts struggling that you run into a problem. I've got a pretty good knotless soft nylon net and I haven't seen or heard of any issue's with it. Most fish I C&R never even touch the webbing of the net so to me the material is not nearly as critical as technique. If you want to buy a rubber net by all means go for it but I'm not going to criticize anyone for using a nylon net properly!

This I totally disagree with. What gets C&R'd in 3 minutes with a net and a photo can take twice as long or more without a net. I consider proper net handling a critical part of proper C&R.

Good comments BB. Knotless nylon nets seem to be pretty fish friendly as well. Does a good C&R net guarantee a well handled fish? Surely not. Does a standard knotted nylon net always lead to a damaged fish? Of course not. A quick, netless bankside grip+grin and hasty release can be great. The handlers mentality and care for the subject being handled will always go the farthest with regard to impact, or lack thereof.
That having been said, a good number of handling experiences don't go quite as planned, regardless of one's skill and experience. Fish are slimy and they flop a lot. If using a net, why not back up your expert handling skills with a bag that runs less of a risk of tearing them up.
