Hey Guys,

Two days ago a fly guide killed a native steelhead on the upper hoh. See
http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/boar...inger-Upper-Hoh
The POS in question is Todd Hallingstad:
http://naturesdrift.com/

Killing native fish in the upper Hoh is illegal and unethical and should not be supported by the angling community, nor allowed by WDFW. His license should be revoked and all property used in committing the crime seized. Flame away and pass the word.

If there were witnesses, I hope they notified WDFW. Let the guide and client explain themselves to WDFW LE. Flaming away on the internet is a waste of energy.

Stamthug,

Uncivilized or not, just don't fish bait upstream of Hwy 101 on the Hoh.

Damn,.....ain't pulling no punches are ya?

Never killed a wild steelhead in my life and sure can't agree with what happened here.

Although I would like a little more info before passing judgement. Especially considering the guy's name is now public knowledge.

My 2cents

Naming someone as an offender without proof is a bad way to run and can get you sued. If the guide named is not the guilty party he could sue for the damage done to his business.

So far I have not seen a confirmation or official report concerning this, we might all want to untwist our panties before jumping to further conclusions.

This is from his website FAQ (doesn't seem like the type):

Can we keep fish?
Yes, You can keep
hatchery fish where legal.
Catch and Release on all
wild fish. Even on WSR
rivers NO Exceptions.NONE
Some rivers offer hatchery
fish that we will keep and
cook for either shore lunches
or dinner. It is possible to
take fish home mostly during
the salmon runs May
through October. I don't
handle any fish cleaning or
packing it is the
responseability of the angler

Stam,

I always thought I had nothing to worry about by fishing single barbless hook flies, so I seldom read the regulations. With all the river closures happening this year, I need to pay more attention. And to think I was attracted to fly fishing because it is "simple."

It's always a bummer to hear about this happening.

I'm not impressed, one way or the other, that these were fly guys, and I don't see why that is relevant. Poachers come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

I would be surprised if the reasons behind this guide's decision to bonk a wild fish illegally weren't monetary. As wild steelhead become increasingly rare, they become increasingly valuable trophies to the same sort of human animal that kills an elephant to make a trash can or stool out of its foot. Sadly, most everybody has a price....

Yo, people, where is the proof? For all we know the guide named had nothing to do with this. The lack of evidence here should give people pause, this thread is really disappointing.

Now that a fly guide has done the unthinkable, what about all the wild fish that die in indian nets everyday in the lower Quillayute system. It's not the right thing to do, but my lord people, let the guy handle this. It is his problem and like others have said, there may be more to the story. maybe it was a Coho or one of those big Atlantic salmon we saw last week that was taken in the Lower Wilson.

I was on the Upper Hoh all weekend and never heard a word about this(seems the word would have gotten around if it did). I would have to wait on proof of anything like this prior to passsing jud on the guide named.
We caught two colored up spawned out hatchery fish this weekend up there that we turned back. Are we sure this was not one of them(you are not allowed to keep them either but it would make more reasonable if he did not know). From the website it just does not sound like that type of guy.
Just hate to see a bunch of people with their foots in their mouths if this happens to not be true, only a piece of the story or even the wrong guy all together.

TedR,

The original poster wrote that the guide was reported and allegedly ticketed. Also reported on another site by a guide who allegedly witnessed it, so while it's early for a conviction, evidence is apparently not lacking. Of course, this is the internet, and everything may be a fabrication.

It won't be long before none of us will be aloud to do any fishing on wild stocks. It's going to hurt!
