So I am about to undertake the last major project of my remodel this weekend, building a custom shower. It is essentially a 4x6 room with a shower head on each end, a bench and some storage nooks. Right now it is only framed.

I will be using the Schluter-Kerdi membrane and the Kerdi drain for the system. I will build a sloped mud deck, and have the tiles ready to go. I hope to be ready for tiles by the end of the weekend.

Do any you have any tips or tricks that you recommend for this job?

This is going over my dining room ceiling which is one of my favorite parts of the house, failure of the system is not an option.

Cell phone pick of ceiling:

You gonna put in a steam generator? Now is the time to do it.

Cool idea RR. We just got the tile in our shower and now need to grout. We used an acrylic shower pan (3 x 5) cuz we were told it was best and foolproof. Maybe foolproof, but not necessarily the best. We just got final measurements and the quote for the shower enclosure glass. When the glass comes, an artist friend is going to sand blast an in-water steelhead scene. Gotta' have some fun with all this work.

I almost had a custom shower pan (tile-redi) built, but I had a couple of friends who built their own showers and they came out great. Both of them had about the same amount of experience as me. They both used a plastic liner, but I am going with supposedly a better overall system.

As it turns out I have started to like setting tile more than most other home renovation stuff. It allows for the most creativity, and a screw up is not too hard to fix. I am really looking forward to this job.

You better put a picture of your steelhead shower door on here. That would be incredible, but my wife would not go for something like that. I had a custom tile made for our side porch.

I remodeled my shower few years back and was advised the same by my plumber. A tile and grout shower pan is an accident or leak waiting to happen, IMO.
Go with high quality acrylic base and tile down to that.

A mud pan for your shower floor done the right way will last a life time. Not a big fan of the Schluter Kerdi .

You might look at a " Dix system" liner. easy to work with. have used several on different projects. As for the acrylic pan, your right about fool proof but its not in the same class as a mud pan and tile. If you are dealing with a nice home this only adds class.

SkyGuy,

The acrylic pan is foolproof, but doesn't provide as solid a foundation for a heavy glass enclosure. We're using the 3/8" glass, and the glass man prefers a tile pan over solid framing. Too late for that now, but we'll see how it turns out.

Chasbo,

That's some cool etching!! Who did that? Not that I'm switching artists, but it's cool to know who does these kinds of things, as other outdoors people build, remodel, or install new fixtures in their homes.

WE are working on converting photos to etchings, there is a delicate process and if it comes to happen we could copy your phishy photos to long lasting engravings. Add these atop a lighted base and ya got yerself some art right there.

These two are hand cut. Our new grandson is traced and hand cut. Hard to replicate faces and attitudes by hand cutting, photos would be precise.

Those are cool. I am going to have to start figuring out a cool place to put some etched glass. I already know what design I want.
