When Clinton was in office he was constantly accused by the righties of "leading by the polls." When bush was in office, the right bragged that he lead by his gut, didn't follow the polls. Now with President Obama in office, the right is demanding he base his policies and agenda according to how they read the polls.
Wish they'd make up their minds.

When Obama won the 2008 election by 7% it was considered by many on the left as a mandate by the people. Obamacare has almost the exact % against the current proposal, wouldn't that be a mandate by the American people? Just an aside to the very first post in this thread... A little civics primer for those of you who seem to have either slept through Civics in high school, or didn't make it that far in school...we live in a representative republic, and our President is elected by the electoral college, not by popular vote. I'm sure some of you have conveniently forgotten this, perhaps on purpose, especially when Gore beat Bush on the popular vote and still didn't become President. Obama/Biden actually won 68% of the electoral college (365 votes) compared to 32% of the electoral college for McCain/Palin (173 votes)...meaning that Obama didn't win by 7%, he actually won byt 36%, more than doubling McCain's vote. Class dismissed. Fish on... Todd

We don't use the popular vote to elect the President, but thanks for the civics lesson anyway.
And yes, Obama won Washington state by a margin of 100% to 0%.
I believe this is due to the US Constitution, not Todd.

No, the electoral college, which by the way is "mandated" by the US Constitution, is a left wing conspiracy...
Except, of course, in 2000 when it elected Bush over Gore, OVER THE POPULAR VOTE, WHICH GORE WON.

See, I don't think that because you have a different opinion, I think that because you seem to both understand that Presidents aren't elected by popular vote, yet are elected by popular vote if you want to talk about a "mandate"...inconsistent. It's not intellectual superiority, it's either being right or wrong...guess which one you are? How'd you speak out about Dubya's "mandate" in his second term when he won the electoral college by about 6%, and the popular vote by 2.4%? I'll wager you didn't have much problem with it, eh?
