Well that is your first problem you believed the WDFW. The Chehalis Tribe sells their catch to a commercial fish buyer and those tickets are sent to NWIFC and WDFW it is not my problem if WDFW can't figure out what they need to do to get information from Olympia to Montesano. That is not the Chehalis Tribes fault. Please realize that this is how all commercial catch is reported thoughout Washington State it is not something new nor is it rocket science.

Steely I'll be there tonight feel free to ask anything you would like but I am not allowed to discuss Tribal fisheries data in a public forum. I would be happy to discuss anything you might want to know about the Tribes activities over the last few years and their restraint in not having fisheries for years during the eighties and as recently as last year not fishing for Spring Chinook not even for their first salmon Ceremony. I'll look forward to meeting any of you and trying to help fight for the fish and some conservation by our co-managers.

Sounds like a selective fishery, sounds good to me.

Their own offspring will outmigrate at emergence from the gravel and move to the estuary, this means that they have little impact on what food is available for other salmon and steelhead that stay in the river for multiple years specifically Coho, Steelhead and Spring Chinook all species that have a very high demand by sport fishermen and the commercial market.

I hope that helps educate you about why we need to protect Chum it is not so we can catch more it is so that they can reach the gravel and spawn making things better for the whole basin.

Good stuff! Good biology.

sorry but a selective fishery can never be as good as a weir.

I'm thinking of a weir as a selective fishery and a good one at that.

Wild dosen't mean much in the marketing buisness other than its Ocean Run, unless there's another display that has hatchery Ocean Run.

hopes to bolster ??, do you have any science that shows what bill bakke says below is wrong ?

This study concludes that the hatchery fish that spawn naturally with wild fish are a drag on the productivity of the wild population, reducing their fitness and reproductive success.

There are now two opposing recommendations on the use of hatcheries to rebuild wild salmonid populations. Congress recently funded a hatchery review by the Hatchery Scientific Review Group (HSRG) that has recommended many important hatchery modifications to improve their operations and reduce their impact on wild salmon and steelhead. However, the HSRG has recommended an untested premise. By including wild fish in the hatchery brood stock and limiting the number of hatchery fish that spawn naturally with wild fish this so-called integrated hatchery concept can be used not only to protect the wild population, but increase its size.

Untested?

more like unknown and experimental, here is the grays river hsrg plan,

http://www.hatcheryreform.us/hrp_downloa...ok_01-31-09.pdf

Recommendations
This Primary population is important to the ESU. The HSRG recommends a small, integrated, conservation program at the Grays River hatchery (94,000 uniquely tagged, but not adipose clipped, to avoid selective harvest) to sustain the population until natural productivity and abundance has improved to sustain the population.

when will the population improve enough to be able to sustain itself ?, never ?
