What are the odds of being out of town on business for a new job, going for a run on the beach and end up killed by a plane. http://www.ajc.com/news/cherokee/374815.html

Bummer for dude.
Things like this are why I don't jog with headphones. I'd rather be bored while running than dead.

I'm pretty sure he figured his odds of being hit by an airplane while on a crowded beach were low enough before he put the headphones on that he reasoned he would be quite safe. Statistically, he stood a better chance of being killed by a giant sea-monster climbing out of the ocean.

I don't doubt your statistics. However, he is still dead.
When I'm running it's usually on city streets, and I'm always worried about getting run over by a car, or even worse, a dirty bike messenger.

They should have been banned back in the 90's when every third hipster-douche in Seattle & Portland was pretending to be one. You can spot the fakes when they're wearing their get-up with that faggy messenger bag to a Belltown nightspot at 1AM.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

How do you explain to the kids...Daddy wasn't killed by a speeding out of control Toyota; he was pancaked by a plane that fell from the sky. Yer right, it was his time.

Been running for more than 40 years. I think it is really stupid to be out there with things stuck in your ears. safety aside, there are all the birds to hear, animals like deer rustling off in the brush, cars and bikes coming up from behind, other runners............
Safety first.
Just seems like way too many people try to insulate themselves from the world in everything they do.

How horrible for his family. RIP.
I'm not what you would call a runner, but usually try to run between 6 and 15 miles a week as part of the rest of my work outs. I run outside whenever the weather is nice, and on the treadmill other times (that is how you know I am not a real runner). But, I am pretty much dependent on my MP3 player for working out, including running. Part of the deal is to insulate my mind from everything else except the task at hand.
I don't know if I would classify it as stupid, but that is how I roll. As a matter of fact I am about to go for a run (with my ear-buds in like an idiot) in a few minutes.

I wish had the cajones to run with music, cuz there's nothing like some Rage Against the Machine to keep you jacked up for your workout. Every other runner I pass is rockin' some kind of MP3 player but I'm just not comfortable running on busy streets without my ears.
