Lattin's Country Farm/Cider Mill (SE Oly) has at least twenty baby goats now. We stopped by there on Monday and were told their herd was only about half way done having "kids". The babies we saw ranged from a few hours to a few days old. Not sure how old they have to be before they're weaned.

The kind of goats that are raised as a pet, not for dairy, not for meat, just there to be a strange pet with funky eyes and eat blackberries and other stuff. Actually fainting goats are preferred if available, but I'm guessing those run a bit more.

I don't like their eyes. Makes me shudder.

Better than Chunder. Goats taste good as kabobs.

I have four Nigerian Dwarf goats as pets. Two does and two whethers (neutered males). Great pets, but do require work.......trimming hooves, feeding, watering, worming, and building a good protective pasture and shed. Stray dogs, coyotes, bobcats and cougars are concerns.

Goats are not great grazers, like sheep are. They prefer blackberries, branches, and brush. They will graze, but prefer my leftover garden goodies........corn stalks, raspberries vines, etc.

I agree with Aunty....check out rescue goats and always get at least two...they are pack animals. If I had to do it over again, I would go with just whethers.......quieter, cheaper, and in my experience, more friendly. They have great personalities, too. A couple of years ago I had some work being done on the road in front of my house and for several days the big, burly work crew would spend their lunch hour hanging out by my goat pasture petting and watching the goats.

I agree Aunty. I supplement their feeding with a "orchard-grass/alfalfa mix", which is mostly orchard-grass. They need salt, too, so a salt-lick or mineral block is always on hand.

Besides rhodies, make sure your goats don't have any tomato stalks or leaves.....poison. My neighbor prunes his maple trees every spring and throws the branches into my pasture, the goats love the bark and strip the branches clean.

They are pretty cool pets.

Damn goats will make you grin, that's for sure. I'd have them here, but the wife is adamantly opposed.....why, I have no idea. Blackberry vines are a never-ending project around here and I think those 24-hour trimmers would be just right. smile

Yeah I wasn't kidding about the eating part. Buddy of mine had a few goats he raised specifically to eat. We ended up trading some stuff and I got a bunch of goat meat. I did it in my normal vinegar/v8 marinade and it was great! I'd eat that again any time.
Bud is not raising goats any more though....I think there was a traumatic experience or something.
