I liked Reagan. Didn't give a damn about Iran Contra. People got upset about crap that every president has essentially done. Much better than that toad Carter. He got stuff done. Didn't let the little stuff get in the way.

I think it is very relevant when the "little things that didn't get in the way" were things like the law of the land, and sending weapons to our enemies...what's that word that RWWJ's like to throw around whenever anyone questions the gubmints Offense policy?

Oh, yeah...treason.

They should put his face in the corner of every check the Treasury writes to service the national debt.

Fish on...

Trickle down economics.

They should print a bill with his picture large enough that only the people rich enough to have benefited from his policies can carry.

$100,000 bill?

No.

$500,000 bill?

Pfst. Nancy Reagan spent that on a designer dress she wore ONE TIME.

$1,000,000 bill? Getting closer, but we don't want any nouveau riche trying to fake their way into the yacht club, so to speak.

$5,000,000.

Now we're talking. Imagine slapping one of those babies down for a shiny new Gulfstream VI or a week's stay in Dubai or a cute little 2 bedroom speed boat for your teen. Nothing would represent The Reagan Legacy like a $5,000,000 bill with The Gipper's wrinkled mug on it.

Because he showed us a nice old man with a senile brain is just too kindly not to like. Of course he beagn our nasty habit of spending and borrowing, presided over illegal arms deals and lied to the public about it, but hey he never had a hummer in the Oval office. Should put his likeness on play money.

I like how he took away food from poor American children and kicked mentally ill American Veterans out into the streets and sold arms to The Ayatollah...

...so he could save Nicaraguans, El Salvadorans, & Hondurans from 'Communism' and keep them happily employed by United Fruit.

Good 'ole Ronnie...

It's no surprise the three previous posters would join the 4% that ranked him as "poor". They're probably amongst the 11% that ranked Jimmah Cahtah "outstanding".... rofl

People who bemoan the deficits under Reagan tend to forget the people who held the power of the purse in congress at that time were Deemocrats... wink

do those historians work for the fox news channel?

Mebbe it was too subtle, but I think he was laughing at the idea of needing "historians" to tell us about Reagan, when it was only a few decades ago and most all of us were alive to see it with our own eyes...I don't need to read about Reagan in text book to form an opinion.

It's those "revisionist historians".

Reagan does deserve admiration. He royally screwed his base....the wingnut arm of the middle class on down...and they loved him for it.

I have noticed the recent "Regan Revival" and the glorious praise given to him, but I remember a large amount of contempt for him when he was in office.

Funny you mention that.

Put the likeness of one of the men responsible for the largest national debt increases in history on the current form of interest bearing, near worthless, fiat currency?

Seems fitting. grin

Although I will have to admit this ranks pretty high on the "who gives a $hit scale" for me.

Since the huge deficit was mentioned, I will ask what happened to it. I am a firm beleive that there are no true quick fixes in the economy. Reagan inherited a mess. Bush helped it along by continuing to lower interest rates and loosen credit. Clinton did the same and we saw the economy swing around. Bush 2 tried to lengthen the growth by continuing the same. Now we are seeing the economy collapsing again due to failure of Bush to slow the economy and find new areas to keep it growing. Obama is now stuck with a mess that I doubt anyone can fix. By the time we see it fixed, he probably will be long gone. In the end, like Reagan or not, he did eventually reign in the federal reserve and did help to quicken the end of the cold war. Its a toss up on his historical record. I personally think he did a lot of good, but that he also should have been impeached some of his foreign policy actions.

Citation please on this one...................I don't quite understand what you are saying here, and am pretty sure......................neither do you.

I'd like one too since that was a bit confusing.

In my mind he gave the Fed carte blanche to the market with the creation of the Working Group on Financial Markets in response to the 87' crash. Big mistake.

KK,
No citation. I will pull back on my assertion that he reigned in the federal reserve. I was quite young in 1982, and what I remember was the 20% interest bankrupting my father and practically the whole country. My feeling is that he put pressure on the feds to back down on this policy. Under Carter, the federal reserve seemed to do what ever they wanted, and as a result we ended up with the recession of 1982. Could be wrong though, but that was my impression.

Do you really believe that the high interest rates helped our country? It is my opinion that the inflationary pressures were coming from other places then expansion, such as the energy crisis, and that the increase in the interest rates did not work as they should have. As the rates went up, so did inflation. Eventually they just bankrupted so many people that the economy collapsed into a recession. The analysis I remember from college was that the policy was a complete failure. Agian, I was quite young, so I will acknowledge I have no great grasp of this time period.

Krijack - look up "Stagflation" and you'll see what the purpose of the high interest rates was. Also, the high interest rates didn't bankrupt near as many people as you might think... and it was NOT the cause of that recession.

Carter was blamed for paying off the cost of Vietnam. He got stuck with not just that massive war debt and the economic clusterf*ck left over from Nixon & Ford... That and he was a weenie that gave away The Panama Canal.
It always sucks being the guy that has to clean up the morning after.

He was much less to blame as Bush I was to blame for that schitheap he inherited from Reagan, since Bush I was in on the whole thing from the word go.

In hindsight, I'd take 1000 Carters over a single term of Dubya.

My old man had a small independent business and Reagan's economic policies almost put us on the street. That was when my mom had to find a job and me and my brothers became latchkey kids.
