Butchering day. Started with the kill cone.
Headed to the scalder and the feather plucker. (I didn't save the video correctly, dammit!)
Iced them down and took them home for a nice final dress. Started saving the gizzards and hearts, so we'll see how those turn out.
The runt was just under 3lbs, but he was also only 6 weeks old. The big rooster was 6.5lbs dressed. The other hens were 5-6lbs each. Not bad for 8 weeks.

You are my hero! I raised 100 of them and hand killed/hand plucked them. Between the plucker and the cone you have just shown me the way! KILL DEM CHICKENS! and then have a very nice dinner... Coq au Vin anyone?

Though you've probably tried to erase it from your memory, Chuck, you're subconscious is probably trying to dredge up this video...which, by all accounts, is funnier'n'ell...'ceptin', 'course, if yer a chicken or a turkey.

The whole thing is pretty funny...but from 1:54 on, I don't think South Park or the Simpson's could have made a parody that would have been as good as the real thing!

Only on the Dark Side could a thread digress from butcherin' chickens to this. You guys are just sick....I love it!
Seriously Andy, those are some good looking eats...you'll never eat another fryer or egg from the grocery store ever again; there's no comparison and there's no going back. Job well done dude....

Okay, a warning. I suck at photo shop, but here is my shot at besting a Sarah Palin turkey "snuff film."
On to the chicken. We let the big rooster rest 2 days after butchering, but yesterday I used the marinade injector to impart some herb and garlic seasoning into the bird, and then 75 minutes in the Popiel Showtime+ compact rotisserie and BBQ oven. OMFG, and I'm not religious, that was the best chicken I ever had. I will make sure I bring some to any event I attend. Seriously, it blows away anything you have had in the restaurant.
I can hardly wait for the eggs. I finished the roll-out nest box last night. I dropped eggs from 8", and they didn't break on the floor, plus I installed a bumper in the collection area.
Consider me your source of chicken porn from now until eternity.

Here's a way to use up some eggs. I'm on my second "double" batch now, and they are the bomb. Open the jar outside, not in the house. This brine takes the stink out of the eggs.

Nice to know your franken chickens are blowing up. Compared to other birds, these guys are over achievers. Butcher date for my batch #3 is June 19th over here. I'll have a complete commercial outfit, kill cones, scalder, and plucker, on the weekend of the 19th and 20th if you want to bring them on down. Really, it will make short work of them. How many do you have?
My 2 turkeys are doing well, as are the laying hens. Really want to get a batch of quail and/or pheasants. Might have to wait until next year for that.

Someone say they need quail?
Mine are starting to crap eggs like crazy. I'll be putting up 4 doz. eggs in the incubators every 10 days for the rest of the summer. Rais'em a covey at a time
Might have some weird stuff too, like more white pheasants, goldens, etc....

stam your troubles with your rooster reminds me of when i was a kid and would stay with my grandparents. grandma had a pet rooster who did not like me or grand pa. one sunday grandma sent me to get a stewing hen for sunday dinner. i always took a stick with me into the coop. yep i walk in and here came the rooster with spurs out. i did not mean to kill but. he made a great pot of chicken and dumplings. also it was a good thing i went home that night and didn't go back for a couple weeks. grandma had calmed down by then. grandpa said he stayed out of her way for a few days but was glad that bird was gone

The CX issues are overblown. Feed them 18-20% protien food, keep an eye on them, and you'll have few losses. Feed them 22% and above, don't manage them, you'll have issues. I would like some birds that breed true, but the CX are quick and easy.

FYI there is a growers CO-OP here in Kitsap, I actually went to one of the meetings last week. They have a processing system you can rent.
The speaker at the meeting was Fred Berman, he had a very good presentation on mobile processing systems. My intentions are to eventually get a WSDA special poultry permit.
