Wind just blew a tree onto my house, smashing up the roof.

Any tips I should know about dealing with the Insurer?

It's my 1st claim.

That stinks. I would suggest taking pics. If there's a hole in your roof then I'd suggest putting up a tarp to prevent rain damage but it would be hard to hold down in the wind.

Well had that happen about 5 years ago. So turned it in, no prob BUT.......... as I had had a break in two years prior it was to much in some point thing so they refused to renew so my insurance went up. So make sure the damage is enough to make it worth it on down the road.

One thing I learned was get to the adjuster fast ( they usually have a 1 800 number ) and don't mess with much you don't have until they say whatever. Seems to save time and disagreements.

Tough "break" there.....sorry, couldn't help myself.
I'm no help to you, have not had the misfortune. Hope you figure something out, though.

Thanks to my local tweekers I am SANS chainsaw to get the 10" trunk off my roof. Wouldn't move it until the adjuster arrives anyway.

I suppose I could anchor down a tarp with some landscaping blocks.

I just need to choose between White Trash blue or Redneck green.

I had a break in about 10 years ago. They kicked in the basement door. Allstate had a contractor over in the evening no less in about an hour to board up the door. The next day they hung a new door.
Maybe your ins company could get somebody out there tonight to handle the tarp work.

blue is more patriotic than green, just sayin.

and it might be obvious, but make sure the tarp goes over the peak of the roof/ridgeline to prevent water infiltration.

You can remove the tree if possible, just take pictures before and after. It is your job to mitigate damage as much as possible. Once it is safe, head out and put up a tarp. If you need immediate help, give me a call. I have the necessary tools to at least take care of the tree and get you patched up tomorrow morning.

Check your IM's.

I just blocked up a blue/silver tarp--silver side up.

As an appraiser I'm sure you see that all the time--with the home owner trying to tell you the place is worth a Mil-Five.

No. We re-sheeted the whole 9 yards about a year after we moved in.

Irie,

I had a tree fall on my patio roof - missed the house by feet and inches - during the mid-90s windstorm. Pemco is my insurer, and they were cool. Gave me value for removing the tree myself and doing clean up, and it covered the $500 deductable. I was able to redo the whole thing with the reimbursement.

Sorry for your troubles. Hope any interior damage is minimal. If ya' need a hand, give a holler. Course, my chainsaw was tweakerized last year as well, but I have other tools.

Sorry about your misfortune, Irie. Glad nobody was hurt or worse. I've got some very large trees behind my house that have direct exposure to the prevailing winds during these storms, and I keep wondering when my turn is coming....

Best of luck getting things back to normal in short order.

Picked up the saw today.

The agent said he'd kick me down $500 for the "removal" On top of whatever bid I go with. That'll cover the saw and part of the deductable.
