If you have built a better mouse trap then there would be flocks of people beating down your door.If you have the magic bullet to stop commercial fishing here in washington then I believe you would have all ears and eyes on your proposal.

Status quo has not, will not work and it assures extinction.

Undoubtedly the status quo has not worked, and it does assure extinction at some point in the future...however, change just for the sake of change, is not necessarily an improvment...if there was a plan that would reduce the amount of ESA fish being killed in the fisheries, then we'd be at least starting in on the conservation front...until that happens, it's just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

If we're just going to kill the same amount of ESA fish while prosecuting the fisheries, we may as well advocate for a way for sportfishermen to fish the most, catch the most, and spend the most money for our economy...

To do none of these things (improve conservation, economics, or sportfishing) while "winning" will be the most Pyrrhic "victories" in the history of the salmon wars on the Columbia River.

Fish on...

A Pyrrhic victory would be doing nothing as far as the tribes are concerned because they get to cash in when extinction happens.
I see getting the gillnets out a great step for all of Washington.

I would love to see a plan that has a chance in hell of getting passed that eliminates all commercial fishing in our waters but I won't hold my breath. If you have one I, along with lots of others would be all ears.

Here's Step 1 in the plan, which has been clicking along pretty well for the last decade:

Make the commercial seasons shorter and shorter, with less and less fish to catch, until even the most diehard or tax shelter-seeking commercial fishers can't afford to do it.

Giving them a way to make more money, while taking fish directly from the sportfishers and the businesses that depend on sportfishing, is so counterproductive that "sportfishermen" advocating for it would be a really, really funny joke...were it not, sadly, true.

Fish on...

Making commercial seasons shorter and less cost effective would work if most of the commercials did not work up in Alaska too. They make their travel and beer money here while making their income up north.

Waiting for this to happen is like waiting for a politician with a back bone that won't whore us out to the corporations.

Advocating gillnets out of those waters is but one step toward getting them out of all of washinton states waters, the sooner the better!

i think we need to be working on more policys like the commission has for lake washington sockeye,

http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/policies/c3608.html

For fisheries directed at Lake Washington sockeye, the first 200,000 non-treaty harvest will be provided to recreational fishers. If the allowable non-treaty harvest is greater than 200,000, commercial harvest directed at this stock may be considered.

this fishery is the result of a mitigation hatchery and it`s pretty clear that the access to the fish for the non-fishing the public is being satisfied by the tribal fishery, this type of policy could be used all over the state to ensure sports get a full season and any extra would go to the commercials and have them go in as late in the season as posible so it doesnt screw up sportfishing

Pyrrhic... had to Google that one.

After Pyrrhus...
He was king of the Greek tribe of Molossians,[3][5] of the royal Aeacid house[6] (from ca. 297 BC), and later he became King of Epirus (306-302, 297-272 BC) and Macedon (288-284, 273-272 BC). He was one of the strongest opponents of early Rome. Some of his battles, though successful, cost him heavy losses, from which the term "Pyrrhic victory" was coined.

Man.... I really do need to get out more.

Boater, you would be welcome to start your own initiative and drive that boat. Start your own grass roots event and go for it.

Doc- with as much as you do and how many things you have your hands into I would be amazed to not find at least one thing you didn't know or have a handle on. Keep up the good fight and I'll wait for the next set of pics that I know you will post.

Ballot measures are a bad idea, success in Oregon against gillnets is 0-2, defeat paralyzes any further pro sport legislation for a period of at least 10 years.

If you're referring to banning gillnets, then yes it has been defeated by Oregon voters twice.
The biggest problem here is the 30 second sound bite the commercials will be running, it's unbeatable, add the fact that they have very deep pockets and your chances of successfully convincing the non-fishing public is just about zero.
FYI it takes about 5 million to run a winning ballot measure campaign in the state of Oregon.
