Training is exceptionally important. Many own firearms but few spend comparable money on being able to secure them and fewer yet on training.

As we spend some money on training, we will only appreciate it and never regret it. Understanding use of force, and consequences of use of force, are key. Even if 100% justified and ethical, the court room time, expenses, and lost sleep are a major use of resources.

Avoidance is even better for a civilian, who is not obligated to go into harm's way.

Learning, and having available, non lethal tools, such as pepper spray, is helpful. and training is good there as well.

I am not a professional, just a citizen.

Reading that Aunty M doesn't take what I say seriously really ruined this thread for me. I'm just a liberal who thinks this country began going downhill when we stopped hanging horse thieves. It may seem like a shame that someone could be killed for assault. But if a person knew they were likely to be shot and killed for assaulting someone, one of two good things would happen. They would decide against assaulting others, or they wouldn't, and the world would be a better place without them.

If you really believe that you may want to check the following for starters:

That said, don't look for any such prosecution.

I know of three personally. One was a coworker in Port Orchard who did go to trial and a jury of his peers found him not guilty by reason of self defense. A guy with road rage followed him and his family to their home and started getting physical in his driveway. BANG.

The second was a Veterinarian in Shelton who was in his clinic when two guys were looking to steal drugs. BANG. One was killed as he was running away. Never charged.

The third was a teenager in Mason County who shot a man with a baseball bat who was breaking into his house to beat up his father. BANG. Never charged.

It happens more often than most people realize. Bad people don't CARE if you live or die while they are committing a crime. Better learn or be a dead victim IMO. You would NEVER forgive yourself if one of your family members got killed and you could have prevented it. Especially when the killer gets less than 25 years and is out in 8.

Aunty,

How are these people? Do they think about it? How long did it take to get over it?

Stories like this are why I fish from westport and seiku rather than la push or neah bay.

Grew up in Sekiu, Nothing has changed in the last 50 years. We used to fight them every summer on the beach when they were all drunked up. They used to sneak down the coast and steal motors off our boats and damage whities car if you left it unattended on the rez. My father and grandfather knew everyone of them and still had problems!

I grew up in Forks, and although i never got in a fight, I avoided La Push. Too bad they got the best piece of property on the peninsula. Now they get to control access to the Salt Chuck and rape our salmon and steelhead runs. all we can do is hope for a Tsunami. Sorry about your bad experience, hopefully the fishing was good...
