Is anybody fishing the Mitchell 300 for steelies? or other fish?

The Made in France Mitchell 300 was the reference spinning reel for many years, in price range similar to the Symetre/Stratic price point when there weren't as many choices and things cost less, relatively speaking.

I've dug out my Mitchell and want to fish it, preferably on an old school fiberglass stick. I was never able to afford a good rod so don't know what to put it on.

Ideas are most welcome. Thanks.

It would be perfect on an old Eagle Claw Steelie Granger. I have half of one. . .

If you want a few others Mitchell 300's......let me know.......I've packed them around for 50+ years......

I'd put it on any 9.5' or 10'....6 - 10 pound rod.......Shimano, Lamiglas, Loomis.....should do the trick.

Not many fiberglass rods .... maybe a Fenglas if you can find one.

That sounds like a good match, Dave. but why do you only have 1/2?

sounds like a perfect match for a fenwick FS83 or FS85!

seeker makes blanks that are a [censored]-for-tat match to the old fenwicks. prices were super reasonable until this year when they jacked them up by about 50%.

If you're going to fish your Mitchell 300, you ought to stick with one of the rods that were commonly used when the 300 was at its peak. My first steelhead was caught on my own 300 when it was attached to an Wright McGill (Eagle Claw?) Powerlight (yellow fiberglass) model rod. Mine was 7 1/2 feet long, but the rods came in all sorts of lengths and actions. Another good choice for you would be an old brown Fenwick FS 83, or an FS 79. All were great rods for their day, but the Fenwicks were a little too expensive for me way back in 1969 when I got out of the army - sold for about $39.95 if I remember right. I caught a LOT of steelhead on that old yellow rod.

I like your idea of using your old Mitchell again. Mine is still buried somwhere in my garage.

Chum Man....funny that you got censored.... rofl

Doc Rick,
I have a couple of the old ones as well, and used to fish them on FS 79's, of which I broke at least three. Sure was a fun spooning rod on the Skagit years ago. Back in those days my favorite spoon was the weighted 50/50 Canadian Wonder (also now extinct) which sold for a whopping 50 cents apiece.
I still have one of the old 300's in the "ready to go" mode, but it somehow gets upstaged by the better quality gear every trip. Enjoy yours. thumbs

With all due respect, a Mitchell Garcia 300 reel needs to be paired with a fiberglass Garcia Conolon rod and spooled with old school brown Garcia Royal Bonnyl monofilament.

Can't tell you how many Alaska reds, silvers, and humpies succumbed to those outfits in the 70's.

Doc,

The green Conolon rod was my salmon rod paired with a Penn 109. How old are you, anyway?

Older than most think.....

Got that youthful, well-preseved Ornamental thing going for me.

Interesting that the Mitchell 300 comes up here. Last week I stopped by Collier SP in SE Oregon on way to visit relatives in northern California.

I walked over to view the Williamson River just below where Spring Creek enters.

It was there in 1957 that I first saw a Michtell 300 where a high school acquaintance was tossing a nightcrawler to the far bank, an amazing feet when most of use were using steel telescopic rods and automatic fly reels for our trouting adventures.

I bought two 300's and two Ambassaduer 5000 (green direct drive level winds) at Ed's Surplus back in the 60's for $22 per. I still fish the 5000's but the Mitchells are long gone.

Those Mitchells were the best until I went to DAM Quicks, which are now a memory like the Mitchells.

I can remember saving for my first Mitchel 300 for a long time, picking raspberries in the Puyallup valley. When I finally had enough to get it at the old Tacoma "Valu Mart" my Dad told me to put my money away and bought it for me! It was one of many that I completely wore out. Oh the memories.
