People are sick of you always bashing the CCA boater. Boater isn't the only one that can't stand the CCA and their positions in certain aspects....... I too wish they'd pack up and head back for Texas.... Keith

People are sick of you always bashing the CCA boater. I'll take over for him then! Oregon CCA is one huge disappointment as usual. Yesterday there was an ODFW commission meeting concerning the emergency regulations for fall chinook on the northern coast of Oregon. As usual CCA Oregon was a no-show. The Lower Columbia Conservation and Recovery plan was presented and, of course, Oregon CCA had no comment and once again was not there. I have no opinion of the Washington CCA but the Oregon group is worthless! I was able to tell them that to their face at the recent Sandy river Spey Clave. They were there soliciting for membership and I told whoever it was that I was not impressed with their group and some of it's members.

Stew,
If for some reason personnel were not able to make those meetings, they would have arranged for written recommendations or a private meeting. Volunteers aren't available everyday. The more volunteers they have to get involved in various committees, the better the coverage in the meetings. If you want more done, they must have more people to find qualified individuals to take on a project or train them to do so. While many new members are not able to volunteer right away, some folks in retirement take the job on full time. Since we have to plan for turnover, we need more members to plan for future needs. Ya never know who the volunteers will end up recruiting. Getting in the face of a volunteer recruiter does not convey your message to the right people. It won't get you an answer, why no representative was in a meeting.
I find your complaint interesting. Just three years ago, the conversation was about what cannot be done, or what do first.
Keith, these are your neighbors and customers involved in the process. Texas is only advisory and support. If Texas was so bad, tell me why after 33 years and 50,000 Texas members, why are they still opening new chapters? They have paid for scholarships for marine science, built hatcheries, establish artificial reefs, cleaned up derelict gear and bought night vision gear for LE. None of it was done with NW money, nor will it ever.

BS ! I looked through all of the public comment and there were none from Oregon CCA. When it comes down to REAL conservation you guys are a fraud.

I can answer that. I grew up in austin and worked with the CCA (then the GCCA). They are marketing experts and created a brand around the Redfish Sticker. That sticker (just like what they are pushing here) was the MUST HAVE item for every Texas boat, or Truck. Texas as you can imagine is not a big pro-environment area but the CCA found a niche in branding sportfishing environmentalism. There angle was to promote the idea of better fishing and the symbol of that was the redfish sticker. Sign up as a member, pay the 25 bucks, and you’re a member and you get your own sticker. The sticker became (and still is) trendy, people who had never seen a fish still had to have the GCCA redfish sticker, Eddie Bauer, Truck, Boots and a GCCA Redfish sticker. GCCA found a marketing product that was very appealing to suburban men, it gave them the feeling of supporting something environmental.. without the left politics, or actually having to do something. Make no mistake the CCA is less interested in results than the NSIA is. There a membership organization, they have the same goals as Comcast, or any newspaper .. they want paying subscribers. Just do the math.. Or better look it up. they have 12 employees all making 6 figures a year with the top 2 making close to 200K a year. there 2008 total revenue was 10+ million but they only spent 5+ million. .. odd? If anyone in intrested i have there 2008 IRS filings (there public info for 501C3's) i can email but still holding out hope? ( i admit i hope they pass a bill too.. but i know better) THE SHRIMP NETTERS STILL ARE IN TEXAS (the reason they supposidly started) .. now after all this time and the tens of millions of dollars they would of gotten the nets in their HOME WATERS .. out? If you like the CCA fine.. but understand them for what they are.. a sticker company who wants to make you feel like your doing somthing without the lefty enviro politics. There not going to change the world or even try very hard. joshua

ORS...prepare for the hatemail to fly, I get it every time when I point out anything that isn't squeaky clean about the CCA. I'm all for raising money, but when I see the entire chapter process used to have banquets, then make money to have the next banquet, and then to have another banquet...well, let's just say I'd rather see some action rather than a never ending membership drive.
Fish on...

BFD................... Ironically it's a small world and I have a few friends in Texas....... Joshua pretty much explained it above. It's a "click" so to speak.. Nothing wrong with raising money and doing some of the things CCA aims to do. But the big problem is all the group is doing is giving away our rights as sportsman or bandwagoning to do so..... Keith

Thanks freespool, Good read. I agree that dams are a huge part of the problem, and we can generally trace the major beginning of the end for many fisheries to the establishment of the dams, which effectively end the spawning cycle. It seems to me that dams are a big part of the problem, and a part that needs to be fixed, and I am interested in knowing more about any groups that focus on changing dam policy. I also think that overfishing, habitat, disease and other areas are important as well. I have no intention of trying to change anybody's mind about the CCA or any other group one way or the other, I'd rather go fishing and swap stories over some Crown Royal. But it seems to me that to bash one group, like the CCA, because it doesn't focus on whatever issue we think is more important, is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I think the effort would be better spent trying to advocate and fix that part of the problem, like dams, if that's the focus. See you on the rivers.

“The difficulty we have with that is that if the commercials are allowed to fish the main river with selective (gear) that means they will be (allowed) to extract more hatchery fish and because of catch balancing mandates the possibility exists that they will be taking even more hatchery fish and that will have (negative) impacts on sport fishing.
i agree

Just an observations that making blanket statements is, well, very undefined. Worse, in this case they berate efforts to raise funds which go to within State conservation efforts. There is no perfect organization and I would suggest that complainants are too focused on the CR issue to recognize what other within State activities CCA has expended its finances and personnel resources - both hired and volunteer.

Larry,
This thread is a year old. The dog catcher is looking for a beat down.
Might be good enough odds to bet on, the dog catcher joining big stick.
