Headed out to Westport Saturday night and fished it Sunday in my buddy Marty's boat (spinnerround on the board).

We had a couple of firsts that day. Matt (slick50) hit his first ever Chinook. He got a good one! Fish weighed 27 on a scale when we got back home bled and gutted.

Marty got into the action with this nice fish. That was it for keeper kings but a killer pair!

Here is where things got a little weird. We were trolling in 220 feet of water out in front of Ocean Shores. Matt's rod goes off and he starts fighting a fish. Then he gets broken off....flasher and all.

Right after the break off the downrigger next to me starts to make a racket. I take a look and the cable is screaming off the rigger. Then the wire goes straight away from the boat. A 12lb ball perpendicular from the boat! Then the ball goes forward and around the boat and under. We all look at each other and have that WTF look on our faces. Then 10 yards behind the boat a 10-12 foot shark surfaces and smacks the water with his tail sending up a big ole wall of water while he rolled. All 4 of us saw it. Then the cable broke and that was the end of the action.

One of the stranger things I've ever encountered.

Hey Seastrike, I can't believe that I looked right at you on the dock and didn't register in my peabrain who you were, duh.

Looks like you did great with the big fish, we ended up with 6 coho and 2 kings 22 and 15. Lost a few other nice kings also, but the coho bite was good for about 3 hrs down south. Came to the dock at around 7 pm and saw some buddies and they told me they had been catching good kings NORTH all week, we went south.

That was an amazing day for sure. Thanks fellas for inviting me along. I am still pumped about that fish!

As far as the shark I still don't know that was about. It stripped the cop car and flasher rig and then destroyed that downrigger all in about three seconds! Then it surfaced very briefly behind the boat to laugh at us. That fin was huge! It was NOT a small shark and I gotta wonder about the species for sure. It was a first and hopefully a last!

You had that look in your eye Steve. You were on a mission! We had a set time to pull out at 2 so we were off the water early.

Nice fish!
I've seen several great white sharks and lots of 6 gill sharks over the years out of Westport.

Did it have a long tail? I've had thresher sharks break my cable before in Ca., but never seen them here. They usually wack they're prey with they're tail to stun it. Or possibly a six gill.

Could've been one sired by this beast

My wife did some research on the sharks of the north pacific. She tells me that the most likely shark that grabbed our gear was a Salmon Shark.

They are similar in appearance to the Great White shark, but are smaller. The articles I read on them indicate that they feed on salmon, herring, squid and cod.

Since it ripped up the cop car lure I would assume it could have mistaken that as herring or another food fish. Whatever the case may be it was a crazy sight to see! It was a big shark that caused a ruckus on the gear.

Not a Blue. Salmon shark looks right but what I read is 12 ft would be an exceptional specimen. I don't know. It was 10-12 ft long and it's body was at least as big around as a garbage can with a big tail and huge dorsal.

Whatever it was I'm glad I got to see it although briefly. I'd rather not be that close to one again. That thing was pissed off.
