I agree Chuck, not a suprise.
I do hate to see someone lose their job, especially after the weak team he was given to manage. I'm not sure anyone would have had a winning record with those players.

But hey, it is football season right? wink

Sad part about this deal is that guys they are bringing up to coach the team were probably happy where they were. Now they coach for a maybe a year (more or less) and the next thing they get fired for not winning.

+1 on the Valentine choice.

Also saw other candidates include Ryne Sandberg, Darren Brown, and Don Mattingly.

Small ball has it's time and place in a game, but never as a blanket philosophy throughout a season. Although I do enjoy watching big leaguers actually have to revert to performing the fundamentals of the game. If a guy in the bigs can't lay down a bunt in a crucial time of the game that tells you a little about his baseball prowess. It's why I enjoy watching the National League a little better than the American League.

If a team can get more aggressive on the base paths, small ball becomes so much more productive.

Leadoff walk or single, stolen base, sac bunt or ground ball to the right side to move the runner to 3rd, fly ball equals 1 run in with 2 outs.

The stolen base is huge.

Add in some timely hitting and things can get rolling.

Agreed.

There is no defense for an abundance of speed on the basepaths. Completely changes the game.

The trick is getting all those "Willie Mays Hayes" guys on base in the first place grin

Lou would put guys in motion at every opportunity. Even marginal base runners would get into the action with hit and run. Even saw some delayed steals when Lou was running things.

I saw that two coaches were also let go. One was a bench coach. What the heck does a bench coach do? I sure the guys know how to bs, chew and sit without too much coaching.

I agree, Chuck, that the bench coach was probably not much of a loss (or at least not one that can't be recovered fairly easily). The other coach who went away was the pitching coach (Adair?), who was, despite the team's woes, doing a great job. Not many games have been lost by pitching this year. It's a shame to watch a guy who was an important part in the one aspect of the team that was functioning well walk away because of this move. Hopefully, this turns out to be the right move. Only time will tell.
