My next gun is going to be a lever action rifle for horse hunting... Any suggestions? Seems like everyone is talking about .45-70s, but MAN those prices are HIGH!

Any suggestions from you guys?

Thanks! smile

Any round that will drop a Elk/Moose will drop a horse.

I sure like my marlin 1895 cowboy. Ya it's a 45-70 but I sure like it. it will drop anything I can hit with it. I put different sights on it.

I have not hunted elk with it....yet, but I would, and yeah, a good one will set ya back a paycheck or two.

I thought the 1894 was only chambered for pistol cartridges?

Hornady has some nice new rounds for the lever actions. Check 'em out. Father-in-law has a Marlin guide gun in .45-70. Tack driver for a lever gun. Usually shoots under 1.5" groups at 50 yards with open sights. Never had a scope on it, but it could shoot better with some glass on it.

For a cool lever gun, get one of the old Winchester model 71's in .348 Win.

okay....maybe an old singleshot rolling block hepburn in .45-70 or .45-90 is cooler, but I just don't have one of those.
Oh, I was thinking the current 1894s. I haven't seen any of the older ones. I've always liked the 1895 in the rifle version.

Go with a Marlin 336 chambered in .35 Remington. Great gun & a great round. I've been very happy with the 200 gr Core Lokts. Can't go wrong with the .35 Rem.

A Marlin in .30-30 is not a bad choice either.

Of course a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage would also be an excellent choice.

But then there is the Marlin .450 Magnum.

My Choices would be:

1. .35 Rem

2. .300 Savage

3. 45-70 or .450

4. .30-30

A little more expensive than the Marlins but along the same lines as the Savage and IMO a little better looking is the Browning BLR that you can get in all sorts of calibers from .22-250 on up to .450 Marlin.
