As I PM'd you, I see nuthin' wrong with the fixed Loopys. Really can't dislike the FX-3 6x42. Not as fancy-schmancy as what Staminal recommended, but if he was shootin' at the elk with the VX, I'd consider differently! Just kidding. Both Loopys will do just fine..... Slap on some Tally LW's and pair of Butler Creek caps and you're in the game. PS. Get turrets!!!! They kick ass.

turrets on an Oh Six is like burning racing fuel in a yugo.... +1 Personally, I'd look larger than 40mm, as I like as much light gathering as possible. My 40's are likely to be replaced soon... or I'll get glasses, which is cheaper :)The VXIII 3.5-10X50 is juicy.

I have the VX3 3.5-10 x50 on my .300 Win Mag. Great scope.
My .30-06 only has a Williams peep sight on it, but I do have a fixed Weaver 4X that I can toss on it as well.

No argument with Leupold in the suggested fixed or variable variety nor with an elevation turret on a hunting rig. The question one should also pose is the intended purpose. Westside black tail at chip shot distances may preclude the fixed 6 and turret(s) while potential for next zip code mortar lobs at targets may require some further thought and subsequent copious practice of same.... I do favor simple duplex CH's, with or without an elevation turret for use with a LRF, as too much clutter can lead to calamity. PS. Get turrets!!!! They kick ass. On occasion, Parker has Tourettes....

my Montucky 7wsm is just starting to find it's range at 500, 700 to 1000 should be fun.....they'll never even know I was there. Lots of variables come into play after launching projectiles at targets several football fields distant. Sounds like you're doing your best to mitigate the biggest one, while having some fun in the process....

The Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 is the CLEAREST scope I have looked thru EVER. It has a ton of eye relief (not that it's necessary with an '06). Hard to beat it for the money and if you want the ballistic style reticles the Rapid Z 600 is built around the general ballistics of the 30-06.
I love my Zeiss and that's after owning all kinds from Swaro to Leupold and practically everything in between.

The Trijicon Acupoint on an M1A Scout that has been "national matched" is soon awaiting it's Sadlak AB mount to become perfection.

I second the Zeiss Conquest. After owning several scopes I have found the one for me. And it's cheaper than the leupy
I have a Sheperd P1-A1 I want to sell.

You're not too far off from the price range of a Leupold Mark 4 in the 4.5-14x50 with tactical towers. Although a little too much for that gun if you get the Mark 4 scope mounts you can take the scope off and put it on another gun and then put it back on and it's still dead on..... By far the nicest scope I've looked through..... Personally, I have a few VXIII's and they're excellent scopes as well. But I'd stay away from the 40mm objective. They just don't let enough light in.... 50mm all the way for me from here out.... Keith

50mm objectives only shine with 30mm tubes.
