Bonneville dam counts for coho are way behind the 10 year average, something wasn't good in the ocean.

I was up at Sekiu Friday until Sunday. The town is at approx. 50% capacity of what I have seen in the past. Plenty of camping and moorage available. The camp sites at the Tavern, empty. Olson's Lot 3, virtually empty. We camped at Van Ripers and I was able to easily park the trailer right across the street and had no problem parking the truck very close to the camp site too. Fish checkers are seeing 6ish fish a day. We fished Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, and bagged Sunday due to heavy fog and rain. CnR'd several Blackmouth in the 5 to 8 lb range, no silvers at all. We fished Friday from Slip Point to Pillar Pt, covering 150' water out to 350' water and no takers. Saturday we covered Sekiu River back to Sekiu and no takers. Waitress at the Breakwater says that it is one of the worst seasons in her 40+ years there. Fish that are being caught are out in the 700' water in the shipping lanes and it is a 1 fish a day deal. The scarcity of bait in the area was alarming. One guy and his wife that we talked to Sunday morning in the cafe had been there a month and he said that the majority of the fish he has been getting had empty stomachs, a few were full of Krill. He has been going out into the shipping lanes almost exclusively and using whole herring 100' to 150' down and getting 1 maybe 2 fish a day. Daily limits have been few and far between. On a good note, the water last weekend was perfect, minimal swell and no wind. If you go, have patience. smile

I agree and understand where people are coming from. I should have checked my numbers from this time last year for fish in system. I guess what I was trying to say is that there seemed to be a decent number of fish in PS 2-3 weeks ago and those fish have sinced boogied up river. From the sounds of it, they are not being followed by more.

I don't think the rain will help. As I posted last week, they should be stacked like cord wood this time in sept. Anyhow, fished yesterday with horrible results once again. 9 hrs on the water with a few blackmouth and one keeper about 11 and one release of the same quality. Sorry to say but not looking so hot, so if you go, as posted above, have patience. On a side note, we were fishing inside of the crowd, 230 to 260 when we saw action......if you call that action.

Read on other boards that Westport is doing pretty well, with really big coho (high teens, and a few 20's) coming in. Maybe Salmo or Smalma can answer this quesion. What do most of the CWT coho come back as from Westport. Are they mostly CR and southern river fish? Any chance that coho are moving up the coast towards us? Lie to me, it might make me feel better...

CWT information shows that the vast majority of the Puget Sound coho make a right hand turn at the mouth of the straits and go north spending the summer off the coast of Vancouver Island. Yes a few do go south and some are caught off Westport. However on a typically year the ocean coho fishery off the Washington central/south coast is driven by Columbia coho.

My best guess is that those fish currently being caught off Westport are a combination of Chehalis (and othe coastal stocks) and late (N stock) Columbia fish. Both are know to be late returning and typically larger size fish.

Sorry just isn't my nature to lie. All can do is give my best wishes and hope you have good luck. One thing I do know is that good or poor years one can only catch fish if one goes fishing.

Tight lines
Curt

Friend of mine who passed a few years back told me big fish small run, small fish big run. So far this seems to be holding, I think the highest ocean surface temps ever recorded in 2009 took there toll on the food supply.

Look at it this way. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get some yard work done. Maybe even get some paint on the house.
Build the wifey that chicken coop she's always wanted. Maybe even watch a little football.

That is a positive way of looking at this.

I would still rather be out banging away on some hookies in area 9. Oh well

I don't want to admit that I'm totally giving up but I'm going to skip the yard work and hit a river this weekend. Big bummer on straights silvers. Many fond memories.

Makes one wonder if the huge Sockeye return has anything to do with the lack of recreational caught Coho in the straits to this point?

On a positive note, MA 5 does open for unclipped coho today through the end of the month. Folks have been catching some unclipped fish out there.

Thanks Smalma. I do intend to fish Sekiu the last weekend of the month. This is one year that I wish stayed open into October like last year.

Just had a call from a friend who's fishing at Sekiu. Left the dock a little after 6 this a.m. and was back by 9ish with 4 fish in the boat. They ranged from 8-15 lbs. 3 wild and 1 clipped. He said folks were at the cleaning tables all morning long. Maybe, just maybe.......

Word from a friend is the fish showed up 2 days ago. Count from yesterday AM fish checker, 19 boats 75 fish...wonder if this is just a brief spurt, or whether it will hold up for a week or two?

I also heard they just showed up, and they are big fish this year on average.

I hope they're headed east. Thought about going out today, but the fog is pretty thick around PA. Not a good place to play dodg'em with the freighters, even if you have radar. Maybe tomorrow.....
