I have a drift boat with 2 year old Gluv-it that has some significant rock scrapes from the Rogue and the Siuslaw but otherwise is in good shape. What I want to do is clean up the scraped areas and "touch up the 25% that needs re coating.

Is this a good idea?
Is this a bad idea?
Should I stick with Gluv-it?
Can or should I use Coat it to touch up for now?

Thanks in advance.

DR, my DB is only 3 yrs old with one coat of Coat It on it, haven't had to do any repairs but it will be due for a complete coat next summer.

I would say unless the scrapes go all the way down to aluminum you should be ok until the next full caot is needed. You can try a repair, but not sure how it would hold up.

I'd be interested too if someone has tried a repair versus a complete re-coat.

Scrapes definitely go down to the alu min inum. So must cover, but whether must replace or not is thequetion.

Thanks!

Great idea! but UHMW is too expensive for now.

So, it is down to
Gluv it or Coat it, complete or partial coat or recoat for now. What i want to do is sand down the rough spots and put some fresh stuff on.

You can recoat just the damaged area. Just prep the damaged area by sanding it to clean aluminum with 60 or 80 grit. Then feather the edges of the still intact good Gluv it with some 60 or 80 grit, so you've got a faIrly smooth transition area. Then recoat it, using a few coats to build up the thickness and blend it into the existing gluv it.

its not that expensive considering what your protecting.I covered the bottom of my boat with uhmw, 5'-12' sheet uhmw 200.00$. I bought a 2 part glue from one of the only manufacturs that make one that will stick to uhmw , REL-TEK. I had to prep the aluminum and then etch the uhmw. The whole thing only took about 1.5 hrs.

i think it was north river, but one of the jet boat companies is putting uhmw on in the factory, tpparently they put the hull on a big rottiserie type machine and use heat and glue to mold and stick it to the bottom.

Partial coat is fine grind edges down and make sure none is loose and cover bad areas.

I like coat-it over gluv-it.Yes like said above sand down edges then clean with aci-tone and your ready,or just run it another year and do the whole thing next summer on a nice hot 80-90 degree day.Good luck,
SZ

Do not forget to mask off the sides before spreading the Coat-it over the bottom. Don't ask me how I know this!

I just cleaned up the bottom with a 40 or 80 grit(?) sanding wheel on an angle grinder and took off anything that was loose or looked like it was gonna be loose and spread the coat-it with a plastic squeegee trowel. Very easy job.

I need to do it again this year but I forgot to do it during the 3 days of hot weather we got this summer!

Can I use coat it to patch the scrapes in the gluv it?

And I really like the UHMW idea for down the road.

Coat it can go over Gluv it, not vice versa.

I had a friend with the UHMW... it came off after/while hitting a rock, well, partially off, the rest of teh drop took it all the way off. He's not a fan anymore...

Follow up report:
Flipped the boat today, cleaned up the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, put coat it over the cleaned up gluv it, and the deed is done. Will flip it back tomorrow.

Used a stiff wire brush on the grinding wheel, wiped with acetone and put on a thin layer. Instructions say thick layers cure more slowly and recommend no thicker than 10 mils each layer.

It was very evident that the gluv it dries hard and a linear scrape will loosen gluv it on either side so when you clean it up a lot more comes off. I will check out the coat it scrapes next year so "hang on, boys and girls."

Thanks to Seastrike for providing the coat it and to fog Ducker for helping me in many ways.

The good ship Minnow is next heading to the Rogue for a 3 day cruise from Grave Creek to Foster Bar.
