Opinions on line weight are all over place. My cousin introduced me to Steelhead fishing and he always used 12lb Ultragreen, so that's what I've used for years. Now I'm spooling most of my reels with braid in the 20-30 lb range to bring down the diameter of the line and increase sensitivity. It occurred to me that dropping down to 8lb Flouro would do the same thing for me and give me a virtually invisible line.

I've landed 30-50lb fish (Cats, Carp, Gar.....) on 12lb, is there any reason to fish heavier line or is it just a misconception?

Well it depends on your reel and how you will be fishing. If using a spinning reel a lighter line is better for line cap. and casting distance. Bait casters work fine with lighter lines or heavier lines, they normally have more line cap. for the heavier line. As for heavier lines for bigger fish isnt needed, you just have to play bigger fish longer with lighter line. In a snaggier area though heavy line will help stop breaking off fish. Thats how i see it at least. Hope this helps a little
