My dad is in his 80's and is starting to give some of his guns away. He'd rather do it now than have my brother and I wrestling over them later. This is just the start but he gave me a Remington 1100. About all I hunt is steelhead so know very little about this shotgun.

I know it's an older gun and I think it has a 28" barrel (I don't know exactly where to measure it). It has seen very little use and is in excellent condition. Shoots 2 3/4" inch shells and is etched with "full" on the barrel. Anybody know what this would be worth roughly and where can I find more info. Serial #202378V.

What are the pro's/cons of automatic vs pump? It's a 12 gauge.

I dont know anything about the value of the gun but I can tell you from experience that autoloaders have more mechanical issues then pumps. If you can put up with the extra maintenence, they are very nice to have. Most of them kick less and are the same weight or less then a pump.

It's a 12 ga. full choke barrel which is probably better for longer range goose/duck rather than some of the closer in stuff?

I grew up shooting these.
IMO, the 1100 was the first reliable semi-automatic shotgun.
They are a natural fit for many shooters....in a safe manner, with an empty chamber and magazine, close your eyes and mount the gun.
Now open your eyes, and note what you see....with a field stock and standard length of pull, I'm pretty much dead on.

It seems that you have a 28" Full Choke either plain barrel or ventilated rib...you didn't say. A vent rib is nice but a plain barrel works, too.
Measure from the end of the receiver to the muzzle.

That would be a good chukar, duck or pheasant gun. It would also be fun at the trap range....in fact the 1100 is legendary amongst the trap shooting community.

The current model is called 11-87

From copious personal experience, with proper care and feeding, anyone that uses an 1100 will have fun busting clays or birds with a smile on one's face. A plethora of barrels are available to get it to do what you want.

Check prices on gunbroker.com. Around $400 for the vanilla version in good shape. More for special grades....
